Apple Store Down Ahead of iPhone 18 Pro Pre-Orders

Apple's online store is down ahead of iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max pre-orders, which begin at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Saturday, September 12.

"We love that early energy," reads the Apple Store's message when visiting the U.S. website. "Almost ready for you. Pre-order begins at 5:00 a.m. PT. See you soon." Apple has been opening pre-orders at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time for several years, rather than the 12:01 a.m. start time it previously used. Today the store went down especially early.

Customers in more than 65 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, the UAE, the U.K., and the U.S., will be able to pre-order both models when the store comes back online.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max come in Burgundy, Glacier, Silver, and Black. Both models are available in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities, bringing the 2TB option to the smaller Pro model for the first time.

In the United States, the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. Both models launch on Friday, September 18, when deliveries to customers and in-store availability begin.

How to Pre-Order iPhone 18 Pro From Apple and Get the Model You Want on Launch Day

Update: iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders are now live on the Apple Store.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9 at its "Surprise and shine" event. If you're keen to be among the first to get your hands on one, here are some tips on how to give yourself the best chance. If you're looking to grab a foldable iPhone Duo, check out our separate guide.

Apple says pre-orders for the new iPhone 18 Pro models open on Saturday, September 12 at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time ahead of a launch on Friday, September 18. We have a guide to when pre-orders go live in every time zone.

Going on previous fall iPhone launches, shipping estimates for popular iPhone Pro configurations tend to slip by several weeks within hours of Apple's pre-orders opening, which tends to happen the week of the announcement. Ordering quickly therefore can make the difference between a launch-day delivery and an extended wait. These tips should help give you the best chance of grabbing one.

  • Get Ready for your iPhone 18 Pro pre-order: Before pre-orders go live, you have a short time window to set up a "Get Ready" feature in the Apple Store app or on Apple's online store. This allows you to prepare your purchase by selecting your preferred model, confirming carrier status, adding accessories, choosing an AppleCare+ plan, and setting up payment methods. Afterwards, when pre-orders begin, you'll be able to complete your purchase with just a tap. Apple says it is giving customers until 9 p.m. Pacific Time today to get their pre-order ready ahead of the morning rush. This deadline has now passed, but the option still appears to be available for some customers, so act now if you want a quicker checkout on Saturday.

  • Check your Apple Account details now: Do the necessary checks that confirm your payment method hasn't expired, your billing address matches your card, and your shipping address is the place you actually want your iPhone sent to.

  • Get your trade-in quote in advance: Getting a trade-in valuation on your current iPhone adds more screens to the checkout process, so get it done before pre-orders go live. After a trade-in estimate is generated, Apple has to receive your old device within 14 days (15 days in Canada) to ensure you get the estimated value. But this countdown only comes into effect after you receive your iPhone 18 Pro – not before.

  • If you financed your current phone through the old iPhone Upgrade Program, check your status and your replacement financing options now: Apple discontinued the old program in the US in July 2026. Eligible existing members can move to Apple Upgrade, Apple Card Monthly Installments, carrier financing, or a one-time purchase. Note that in the UK, Apple is in the process of transitioning former Upgrade Program customers to its Flexible Finance Account.

  • Open the Apple Store app ahead of time: Ensure you have the app up-to-date, open, and with your saved configuration on screen several minutes before pre-orders go live. The store does not always become accessible to every customer at exactly the advertised second. In fact, it's more likely to open up a few minutes later than that. Also: keep Apple's online store open in a browser on another device. Going on previous pre-orders, which of the two comes back first can vary by launch.

  • Don't change your configuration selection at checkout: Every change you make to your basket likely re-queries Apple's inventory. If your saved specification is available, take it all the way to payment. This includes which color you prefer – the more last-minute changes you make, the greater the risk becomes that availability will change before you check out.

  • Choose in-store pickup if it's offered: There's every reason to believe that Apple's pickup inventory will be allocated separately from its delivery stock, so a store slot can still be available after delivery estimates have slipped. Opting for in-store pickup also removes any potential ambiguity surrounding your estimated delivery window.

  • Launch day walk-in stock is a genuine alternative: Apple could conceivably hold back some inventory for in-store purchases on launch morning. Brick-and-mortar stocks are also allocated per store rather than nationally. Apple's pickup availability checker updates through the morning and is likely to be more efficient and reliable than calling the store. That being said, don't assume you'll be able to walk into a store and pick up an iPhone 18 Pro.

iPhone Duo Can Do Split View, But Not Like Your iPad

Apple's iPhone Duo is the first iPhone that can run two apps side by side, but anyone expecting the sort of freedom that Split View offers on iPad might want to temper their expectations.

Apple's iPhone Duo marketing materials talk up app pairs and side-by-side windows, but it doesn't mention anything about resizing them. There's a reason for that.

If you put two apps side by side on the iPhone Duo's 7.6-inch foldable display, you can't drag the divider between them to make one app take up more space than the other. It's a fixed 50/50 split, regardless.

That's likely to be a disappointment to anyone who's used Split View on the iPad. Indeed, iPad owners have been able to resize apps in Split View when in landscape mode ever since 2015 when iOS 9 introduced the feature.

So why does Apple not let you resize apps on the iPhone Duo? It's likely down to the device's display geometry.

Both the inner and outer displays share the same 1:1.4 aspect ratio, and each half of the inner display works out to roughly the same size and shape as the outer screen. So an even split gives each app a canvas it already has to support, with the divider sitting neatly on the fold. (The only exception to this, it seems, is when watching a TV show or movie above another app in portrait mode; based on Apple's promo videos, Apple TV content is shown in its proper aspect ratio and the lower app is allowed to rise above the fold.)

If you were able to drag the boundary around, not only would it create a bunch of in-between sizes that wouldn't fit neatly on the outer screen, it would also be a nightmare for developers to build support into their iPhone apps.

Despite the lack of resizing capability, the iPhone Duo's foldable screen still has a lot of benefits. It allows you to quickly swap between apps, open two windows of the same app, and have a conversation over Messages while looking at another app's content, in both landscape and portrait modes. You can also save pairs of apps to come back to later.

Using apps side-by-side on iPhone Duo.

So unfortunately, you can't change the app size when you use split view on the iPhone Duo. Only 1:1.

What Upgrading to iPhone 18 Pro From iPhone 17 Pro Gets You

Apple's new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max largely build on last year's models with a series of targeted upgrades rather than a major redesign. The most notable changes dial in better performance, camera capabilities, battery life, and wired charging speeds.

Several key specifications remain unchanged from the iPhone 17 Pro models. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max retain the same 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes, 3,000-nit peak outdoor brightness, and 48-megapixel Ultra Wide and Telephoto cameras with 4x Telephoto and 8x optical-quality zoom.

MagSafe and Qi2 charging also remain capped at 25W, while the overall industrial design – minus the Dynamic Island – is largely unchanged. The Main camera, however, receives substantial upgrades, including the new variable-aperture system. Here's what you can expect if you're planning to upgrade from an iPhone 17 Pro or Pro Max.

  • A20 Pro chip replaces the A19 Pro, with up to 20% faster CPU and 40% faster GPU performance.

  • Up to 45 hours of video playback on iPhone 18 Pro Max, up from 39 hours on the 17 Pro Max.

  • Faster wired charging: Apple says 50% in around 15 minutes, down from around 20 minutes.

  • 2TB storage option on the 6.3-inch iPhone 18 Pro, up from a 1TB maximum.

  • New Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy finishes, replacing Silver, Cosmic Orange, and Deep Blue.

  • Heavier design: The iPhone 18 Pro is 5g heavier than its predecessor, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max is 16g heavier.

  • $100 higher starting price: $1,199 for iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for iPhone 18 Pro Max.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available to pre-order starting Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time / 8 a.m. Eastern Time. The devices will then be released on Friday, September 18. If you're keen to be among the first to get your hands on one, we have some tips on how to give yourself the best chance come launch day.

IMAX Reacts to iPhone Duo's 1:1.4 Aspect Ratio Displays

Production theater company IMAX has responded in a mixed way to Apple's embrace of a 1:1.4 aspect ratio on the iPhone Duo's inner and outer displays. The boxier ratio happens to be very close to the classic "full-frame" IMAX 1.43:1 aspect ratio, which comes from the geometry of the company's original 15-perforation/70mm film system.

In response to an X post from someone wondering if we'll see more 1:14.1 content because of the iPhone Duo, IMAX's official account said, "Love this for them," but then added, "Still not watching movies on a phone..." Pre-orders open October 16 ahead of an October 23 launch.

Apple Execs Explain iPhone Duo's Display Design, Secrecy, and Price

In a joint interview with Tom's Guide and TechRadar, new Apple CEO John Ternus and marketing chief Greg Joswiak explained why the company waited until now to release a foldable, its design philosophy, and how it kept the iPhone Duo under wraps.

Ternus said the timing always comes down to when a product idea meets Apple's bar "for quality and durability, but also for design." He said the device "was like a greenfield of opportunity for us because it was an opportunity to rethink so many different things."

Apple took a hard look at what other foldable makers were offering and felt it "wasn't particularly inspiring," said Joswiak, adding that Apple's approach was "twofold – no pun intended."

First, Apple believes the device's wider 1:1.4 aspect ratio is the answer to designs that resemble two phones "awkwardly stuck together," said Joz. Second, Apple worked on the software to make the Duo "unlike any foldable that's out there."

As for the foldable display, Ternus said the inner screen's top layer is polymer, not glass, which meant devising an entirely new way of making Apple's nano-texture finish. Rival displays, he said, are "kind of cheap-feeling plastic surfaces. They don't feel good to touch, they're kind of wavy, wrinkly."

"The nano-texture just wipes that all out," he added. "It's beautifully flat. It feels amazing to touch and it's incredibly durable."

Joswiak said he is "super proud" that Apple kept the project relatively secret: "We put the extra security on it. We didn't talk about it to anybody. We had a very funny code name, which I won't even repeat, that had nothing to do with it. But we said we're going to keep this one extra secret because, look, people knew through leaks that we were working on a foldable."

Leakers did get the aspect ratio right, Joz conceded. "There were a lot of coincidental instances of people finding that an interesting aspect ratio. And this is when we said, okay, we're going to really keep this one locked down – and it worked."

As for the $1,999 starting price, Ternus mused: "Yes, it's more expensive than the other phones, but we think it's great value." Joz added: "It's called iPhone Duo for a reason. It's like two products."

You can watch the full interview via the embedded video above or on the YouTube website. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin Friday, October 16, ahead of an October 23 launch.

Why iPhone Duo's Under-Screen Camera Isn't in the Corner

If you're wondering why the under-screen camera on the iPhone Duo's inner display isn't placed in the top-right corner, Chinese leaker Instant Digital has provided an explanation.

"The iPhone Duo's under-display camera wasn't placed in the top-right corner of the inner screen because of engineering difficulties," said the leaker in a Weibo post this morning. "The next generation will likely move it there, aligning it perfectly with the outer screen's camera." That sounds like a real engineering challenge, since the opposing rear cameras are the thickest things in the whole phone, but let's wait and see.

Apple Isn't Revealing the iPhone Duo's Under-Screen Camera Resolution

Hidden beneath the 7.6-inch inner screen of the foldable iPhone Duo is an under-display FaceTime camera. The long-rumored feature is a first for Apple, yet the company hasn't provided as much detail about it as the device's other cameras.

For example, unlike the 12-megapixel sensor on the outer front display and the two 48-megapixel lenses on the back, Apple has not revealed the megapixel count of the under-screen camera. Apple's tech specs page for the iPhone Duo offers the following details about its capabilities:

  • Under-display FaceTime camera

  • Center Stage for video calls

  • ƒ/1.8 aperture

  • Tap to zoom and rotate

  • Ultra‑stabilized video

  • 1080p video recording at 30 or 60 fps

  • Animoji and Memoji in FaceTime

  • Wide color capture for photos and Live Photos

  • Lens correction

  • Auto image stabilization

  • QuickTake video at 1080p at 30 fps and 60 fps

  • Spatial Audio and stereo recording

  • Wind noise reduction

  • Audio Mix

Apple says the under-display camera records video at up to 1080p at 60 frames per second, compared to 4K at up to 60 fps for the outer front camera and 4K at up to 120 fps for the Main rear camera. This means the sensor is at least 2 megapixels – the minimum necessary to shoot 1080p video. However, its apparent inability to shoot 4K video may suggest it is less than 8 megapixels. Given that Apple has kept quiet, perhaps it's closer to 2 megapixels.

The under-screen camera's f/1.8 aperture is faster than the outer camera's f/2.2 aperture, which makes sense since it is probably helping to compensate for light lost through the display. Of course, Apple has not detailed the resulting trade-offs in image quality. How it affects photos and video is only likely to become clear once we get more time with the device.

According to a December 2023 report, LG Innotek was developing an under-display camera for Apple using a "freeform optic" lens array designed to reduce distortion and compensate for brightness loss. Again though, we don't know if this is the camera that made it into the iPhone Duo.

Another thing to note is that the display layer over the camera appears to lack the anti-reflective nano-texture coating found on the rest of the screen, resulting in a glossy dot. The screen also likely covers the lens with a lower density patch of pixels.

Regardless, the difference means the camera's location is less discreet than one might expect depending on the angle of ambient light. Apple even subtly acknowledges this in its marketing materials with a circular shadow on the screen, but going on the video below and the variable reflectivity, the effect can be more pronounced than the company is letting on.

Video shared by Instant Digital on Weibo

Samsung has grappled with the same issue. The Korean company previously used under-display cameras in models including the Galaxy Z Fold6, before switching to a conventional 10-megapixel punch-hole camera with the Galaxy Z Fold7. This is Apple's first attempt at under-screen camera technology, so future iterations of the Duo may be better at hiding what can appear like a small smudge or blemish in the display – depending how you look at it.

Apple says preorders for the iPhone Duo will go live at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.

iOS 27 RC Adds Long-Rumored Camera App Controls Customization

In the iOS 27 Release Candidate that Apple released to developers on Wednesday, Apple added the long-rumored ability to customize the Camera app's controls. Way back in May, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reported that Apple planned to make the Camera app more customizable, but it's only now that the feature has made it into the beta roadmap.

To customize the Camera app's controls, tap the button with six circles inside in the bottom-right of the Camera's UI and look for a new Edit button in the top-left corner.

From the new "Add Photo Controls" tray that appears, you can add or remove the widget-like controls to the top of the Camera app's UI, then press Done in the top right when you're happy with your selection. Depending on your iPhone model, you can choose from the following controls:
  • Flash

  • Live Photo

  • Aspect Ratio

  • Timer

  • Exposure

  • Styles

  • Filters

  • Depth Control

  • Night Mode

  • Center Stage

  • File Format

  • Shared Library

A "Rest to Essentials" option at the bottom of the widget tray lets you revert to the default set of controls.

When the customization feature didn't appear in Apple's iOS 27 preview at WWDC in June, Gurman said he believed that Apple was holding it back specifically for the release of new iPhone 18 Pro models, which bring some of the most significant camera hardware upgrades in several years.

While the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max have now been unveiled, it appears that Apple is making the customization feature available to all iPhone models capable of running iOS 27. Apple is set to officially release iOS 27 to the public on Monday, September 14.

iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max Benchmarks Reveal Speed of A20 Pro Chip

Early benchmark results for the A20 Pro chip in the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max appeared early this morning in the Geekbench 7 database, offering us a first look at the new models' CPU and graphics performance ahead of the devices reaching customers.

Based on these early results – which are unconfirmed – the A20 Pro chip across the Pro models appears to deliver around 21% to 23% faster performance in single-core and 27% to 28% faster performance in multi-core than the A19 Pro chip in the iPhone 17 Pro. It's a pretty impressive jump.

The iPhone 18 Pro result lists a single-core score of 4,719 and a multi-core score of 12,677, while an iPhone 18 Pro Max entry delivers similar results, scoring 4,725 and 12,575, respectively. Both identify a six-core CPU running at approximately 4.93 GHz.

There are similarly formidable gains on the graphics side for the A20 Pro. Based on early Metal scores in the Geekbench 6 database (also unconfirmed) the full 7-core GPU variant of the chip in the iPhone 18 Pro models is around 38% to 40% faster than the A19 Pro's 6-core GPU.

The graphics results broadly match Apple's claim in its iPhone 18 Pro press release and product page that the A20 Pro offers up to 20% faster CPU performance compared to the A19 Pro chip in the iPhone 17 Pro models, while the A20 Pro's new seven-core GPU is up to 40% faster than the A19 Pro.

Built using a 2-nanometer process, the chip also features a six-core CPU with integrated Neural Accelerators and 50% more memory bandwidth than its predecessor. Apple also says the new chip packaging and redesigned vapor chamber enable up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation.

Note that these one-off benchmarks, which have yet to be independently verified, don't tell us how the devices will perform during prolonged gaming or other demanding workloads – benchmark results and real-world performance are never totally analogous.

iOS 27 to Upgrade Apple TV Remote App in Two Ways

Apple has updated the design of the virtual Apple TV Remote for the iOS 27 Release Candidate, which was released yesterday, and there are two new features that have been added to the iPhone app's interface.

First up, Apple has added a new button to the top-right corner of the Remote UI with a glyph showing four squares. Pressing the button pops out an app menu similar to the Apple TV home screen that allows you to quickly select an app and launch it.

Second, you can now drag down from the top of the virtual trackpad with your finger to reveal the Apple TV's top shelf carousel, where shows in your watch list are displayed, along with shows that you've started so that you can continue watching.

The two new features, hidden behind feature flags, were discovered by MacRumors and later demonstrated on X (Twitter) by code sleuth "pdfu."

Apple TV Remote is about to get a lot more useful.

iOS 27 RC introduces a refreshed design and two new features, both currently hidden behind feature flags:
1. An app launcher to open apps on your Apple TV.
2. Top Shelf content from the selected app on your Apple TV, with... pic.twitter.com/aOFoToCnrR

— pdfu (@itspdfu) September 9, 2026

The next-generation Apple TV 4K will ship with an upgraded Siri Remote, according to previously discovered macOS 26.7 code findings. We don't know what those upgrades will be, but these two new Remote app features could hint at what's to come. The new Apple TV 4K is likely to be unveiled later this month or in October.

Starting in iOS 27, the virtual Apple TV remote can also be added to the iPhone's Home Screen again, so it's no longer limited to Control Center. If you're on the iOS 27 beta, you can find it by swiping down on the Home Screen and searching for "remote."

Touch ID Isn't the Only Way to Unlock an iPhone Duo

Apple's new iPhone Duo lacks Face ID. That may irk users who are used to the seamless unlocking experience that a facial biometric system provides, but fortunately Apple has brought over one of the Mac's best authentication features to its foldable iPhone to make up for it.

Touch ID is integrated into the Duo's side button for authentication whether iPhone Duo is open or closed, but like regular iPhones, if you own an Apple Watch, you can opt to have it unlock your iPhone Duo without you having to press a thing. Pre-orders for iPhone Duo begin at 5:00 a.m. Pacific Time on Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Feature Apple's New C2 Modem [Updated]

Apple today unveiled new iPhone 18 Pro models and the iPhone Duo – the company's first foldable iPhone – and both the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo feature Apple's new custom-designed C2 modem for 5G connectivity.

Prior to today's announcements, there was speculation that Apple's C2 in-house modem would not support mmWave 5G in the U.S., and that the company would once again rely on Qualcomm to fill the gap for American carriers. Apparently, that's not the case, at least as far mmWave support goes.

Apple's press release for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max and the tech specs page for the two models appear to indicate that the C2 modem is limited to only the smaller iPhone 18 Pro model, leaving the iPhone 18 Pro Max on Qualcomm modems. The reason for the distinction is unclear given the near identical capabilities of the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max.

Apple says the C2 brings AI-powered improvements to cellular quality and reliability, and now supports mmWave in the U.S. The company claims the C2 also delivers meaningfully faster uploads when compared to C1X while consuming 15 percent less energy.

As for mmWave support, Apple's U.S. specifications list bands n258, n260, and n261, alongside sub-6GHz 5G with 4×4 MIMO, but the UK specifications list sub-6GHz only.

Meanwhile, both models feature the N1, an Apple-designed wireless networking chip that enables Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support.

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max come in burgundy, glacier, silver, and black colors, with prices starting at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively. Both models come in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage options and will be available to order September 12.

iPhone Duo is available in star white and night sky colors, and starts at $1,999, coming in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB storage capacities. Pre-orders for the iPhone Duo begin on Friday, October 16, with availability beginning Friday, October 23.

Update: This article originally stated that all three models include the C2 modem, but it appears the iPhone 18 Pro Max does not in fact include it.

Apple Discontinues iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max

Following the announcement of the iPhone 18 Pro models today, Apple discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and ‌iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple usually retires its Pro models with the release of their successors, and this year that's no different. Both the ‌iPhone 17 Pro and ‌iPhone 17 Pro Max are no longer available on Apple's online store.

The ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro and ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max were introduced in September 2025, at Apple's "Awe dropping" event and released later the same month. Both models are powered by the A19 Pro chip and feature triple-array rear camera systems, all of which have 48-megapixel lenses, with one being a 48-megapixel Telephoto camera offering 4x optical zoom and up to 8x optical-quality zoom. There's also a 18-megapixel Center Stage front camera.

These models replaced the titanium frame of the iPhone 16 Pro models with a new aluminum unibody design incorporating an Apple-designed vapor chamber for improved thermal performance, while retaining 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch display sizes. The ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro launched at $1,099, while the ‌iPhone 17‌ Pro Max started at $1,199 in the United States.

With the discontinuation of the ‌iPhone 17 Pro and Pro Max, Apple's lineup now centers on their successor models, with the ‌iPhone 18 Pro starting at $1,199, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starting at $1,299. For the first time, a 2TB storage capacity is available on the smaller model. Apple today also unveiled the iPhone Duo, its first foldable iPhone, which starts at $1,999 for 256GB, with storage options going up to 2TB.

Elsewhere today, Apple has raised the prices of the iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e on its online store.

Apple Raises Prices of iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e

Behind today's iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo announcements, Apple has raised the prices of the existing iPhone 16, iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e on its online store.

The new starting prices for the three models now look like this:

  • iPhone 16: $799 (+$100)

  • iPhone 17e: $699 (+$100)

  • iPhone 17: $899 (+$100)

  • iPhone Air: $1099 (+$100)
So that's a $100 price hike on all four existing models in Apple's iPhone lineup. With the debut of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, Apple has discontinued the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Prior to today's iPhone event, there was growing speculation that Apple may hike the prices of its iPhone 17 lineup when new iPhone 18 Pro models launch in September, especially following CEO Tim Cook's recent comments about "unavoidable" price increases.

In late June, Cook told The Wall Street Journal that Apple is no longer able to absorb the increased cost of memory and storage chips, both of which are in high demand from AI and neocloud companies as they continue to build more data centers.

The scale of the AI infrastructure buildout has prompted debate over whether demand will ultimately justify the hundreds of billions of dollars being invested, but for now it is helping to drive supply constraints across the semiconductor industry. Cook likened the memory shortages to a hundred-year flood. "I've never seen anything like it in any area in over 40 years," he said.

Apple Announces Apple Watch Ultra 4 With Two-Day Battery Life and Upgraded Health Tracking

Apple today announced the Apple Watch Ultra 4, which features a new S11 chip, a redesigned health sensing system, and a larger battery that Apple says delivers two days of battery life.

With improved power efficiency, Ultra 4 offers up to 18 hours of workout tracking with full GPS and heart rate monitoring, or 45 hours in its maximum extended workout mode, according to Apple.

The redesigned health sensing system features a larger electrode surface for improved skin contact during ECG readings, photodiodes arranged in a ring to capture light more efficiently, and larger, more power-efficient green LEDs for heart rate tracking.

More frequent readings are displayed in an updated Heart Rate app and new watch face complications, and Apple says the system delivers the most accurate heart rate tracking of any wearable. The company cites a study involving hundreds of participants running, cycling, and performing HIIT workouts, with an ECG chest strap used as the reference.

Elsewhere, a new Readiness feature analyzes recent activity, vitals, and sleep each morning to provide a score indicating whether users should recover, pace themselves, or take on more activity.

Apple has also redesigned the Health app to offer personalized guidance powered by Apple Intelligence. A new Health Age feature combines Apple Watch metrics such as VO2 max and sleep with blood test biomarkers to compare users' health indicators with their chronological age. Meanwhile, a Longevity tab brings together insights across sleep, movement, heart health, and other areas.

Apple says users can now enter lab results manually or sync their medical records with the new Health app. (In the U.S., Apple will also offer access to a Quest blood panel covering more than 50 biomarkers for $119.) A new VO2 max test uses the iPhone's camera alongside Apple Watch to assess users as they perform a series of exercises, and Apple says it provides immediate results. The redesigned Health app is coming later this year.

The S11 chip's energy-efficient always-on processor enables new Audio Intelligence features, such as Sound Recognition, which identifies sounds such as alarms, doorbells, and a baby crying, and Live Rewind, which displays a transcript of what was said in the preceding 15 seconds.

In addition, "Siri Recap" generates titles, summaries, and key points from conversations for users to review in the Siri app. Apple says users can schedule when it takes notes or toggle it in Control Center, while the audio features do not create or store audio recordings. Siri Recap will launch in beta later this year, initially in English, with additional languages to follow.

Apple Watch Ultra 4 comes in Black and Natural titanium, alongside new band colors and a new titanium Hermès band. It starts at $799 and is available to preorder today, with availability beginning September 18.

Apple Announces Apple Watch Series 12 With S11 Chip, Upgraded Health Sensors and Ceramic Models

Apple today announced the Apple Watch Series 12, featuring a new S11 chip, a redesigned health sensing system, and new aluminum, titanium, and ceramic finishes.

Series 12 comes in Space Gray, Black, Light Gold, and Dark Bronze aluminum finishes. The aluminum models gain Ceramic Shield, which Apple says makes their screens 60% tougher.
Polished titanium models are also available in Radiant Gold and Natural, while ceramic models come in Pearl White and Night Blue.

The redesigned health sensing system features a larger electrode surface for improved skin contact during ECG readings, photodiodes arranged in a ring to capture light more efficiently, and larger, more power-efficient green LEDs for heart rate tracking.

Apple says more frequent readings are displayed in an updated Heart Rate app and new watch face complications, and the system delivers the most accurate heart rate tracking of any wearable. To underline accuracy, Apple cites a study involving hundreds of participants running, cycling, and performing HIIT workouts, with an ECG chest strap used as the reference.

Both iPhone 18 Pro Models Feature Variable Aperture Camera

Apple has revealed at its "Surprise and Shine" event that both iPhone 18 Pro models will be equipped with a variable aperture camera.

Prior to this announcement, some rumours suggested that only the iPhone 18 Pro Max would feature a variable aperture lens, but it seems that both models will benefit from the technology.

Apple says it has developed a system of six laser-cut blades, each thinner than a human hair, to create the aperture lens. The blades are made of a specialized polymer composite for the right balance of mass flexibility and durability.

The aperture adjusts automatically based on the scene. When you're in a darker environment, for example, the aperture opens to let in around 50% more light.

It also allows you to capture cinematic mode effects from regular video after you capture, plus it now supports 60 frames per second for a half-speed effect.

"iPhone 18 Pro has a new 48 megapixel fusion main camera with variable aperture for creative control that wasn't possible before," said Apple. "This is the most advanced camera we've ever made."

Apple Reveals iPhone 18 Pro Models Will Be Available in Four New Colors

Apple at its annual fall iPhone event has revealed that the new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models will be available in four new colors.

Apple describes the new colors as a Deep Black, a refined Silver, a new Glacier Blue, and Burgundy – calling the latter a "sophisticated and unique new color" that's obviously meant to be a successor to the iPhone 17 Pro's Cosmic Orange.

In addition, the rear aluminum and Ceramic Shield glass area are now more color-matched compared to the iPhone 17 Pro models, which had a noticeable glazed effect on the rear of the devices.

Apple is still describing the design and features of the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, with the Apple event ongoing as we write.

iPhone 18 Pro Pre-Orders Said to Start Saturday, September 12

Apple will open pre-orders for at least the iPhone 18 Pro models on Saturday, September 12 at 12 a.m. Pacific Time, claims the X account "ShrimpApplePro," which has accurately leaked some details about Apple devices in the past. Under Apple's typical launch plan, pre-orders begin the Friday immediately following the event, but this year that would be September 11, and Apple has historically avoided the date.

German outlet Macwelt previously claimed a September 12 pre-order date for the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max. Meanwhile, the foldable iPhone Duo is unlikely to be available until October at the earliest – per Bloomberg's Mark Gurman – so pre-orders for it may come later.

Foldable iPhone Duo to Come With Apple Pencil Support

Apple's foldable iPhone Duo will come with Apple Pencil support, reports Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. Gurman previously claimed that Apple had prototyped a dedicated Apple Pencil for its foldable iPhone that was "stubbier than the versions for iPads" and "designed to magnetically attach and charge on the side of the device," but he said it was unlikely that the accessory would be released.

Gurman's latest report mentions only "support for the Apple Pencil stylus" for the iPhone Duo, so it seems that the company has settled on a different approach.

iPhone 18 Pro Dynamic Island to Shrink, Add Third Live Activity

Apple's upcoming iPhone 18 Pro will come with a narrower Dynamic Island that will allow it to display more Live Activities than the current iPhone 17 Pro, according to Bloomberg.

iPhone 18 Pro mockup by Filip Vabrousek

Mark Gurman reports that the new "smaller and improved" Dynamic Island on the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will allow users to "toggle between three live tasks" at the top of their screen.

Previously, the Dynamic Island could only display up to two Live Activities at a time. This design has been in place since the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max, which launched in 2022.

Otherwise, Gurman says the look of the iPhone 18 Pro models is similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models, save for a new "burgundy red" color option replacing the popular Cosmic Orange. Sky blue and Silver have also been reported previously as potential color options.

Internal upgrades include a new A20 Pro chip manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process, longer battery life, a revamped vapor chamber cooling system, and a mechanical aperture lens that enables more precise depth of field and better low-light performance – though this latter feature may be exclusive to the larger iPhone 18 Pro Max.

Last-Minute Leak Reveals iPhone Duo Color Options and Base Storage

Apple is set to unveil its first foldable iPhone on Wednesday, September 9, at the company's "Surprise and Shine" event beginning at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, and a last-minute leak from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman has revealed some key details about the foldable.

  • Foldable iPhone name: Previous rumors and reports have clung to the name "iPhone Ultra" for Apple's first foldable iPhone – a name that Gurman himself has used several times in the past. However, in his latest report, Gurman says Apple has settled on the name "iPhone Duo" for the device.

  • Base storage: A rumor from back in March suggested the foldable iPhone would have a base storage capacity of 256GB, with 512GB and 1TB options also available. Gurman's latest report corroborates the base 256GB storage option. While his report doesn't mention the other two storage options, it seems likely they will define two higher price points.

  • Starting price: TrendForce estimates and other reports have suggested the iPhone Duo will start at above $2,000, and perhaps go as high as $2,500. Gurman's latest report says the starting price will be $2,000 for the 256GB model, while the highest-capacity model will be around $3,000.

  • Color options: Previous rumors suggested Apple would "stay away from fun colors" for its first foldable iPhone, with a darker color being described as a shade of indigo rather than black. Gurman's last-minute report backs up that idea, saying the iPhone Duo will come in white and dark blue.
Gurman says the iPhone Duo will "go on sale as early as October," suggesting it will be available to buy at a later date than the iPhone 18 Pro models, which are also expected to be unveiled today at Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event.

Apple Event Today: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Cheat Sheet

Apple's biggest event of the year is almost here, and all eyes are on Cupertino. With the first foldable iPhone expected to headline Apple's "Surprise and Shine" event on Wednesday, September 9, at 10:00 a.m. Pacific Time, the rumor mill has been running full throttle, fuelled by the biggest single design change in the life of the iPhone.

To get you up to speed, here's a quick reference guide to the rumored upgrades, expected prices, and possible pre-order/release dates of everything we're expecting to see today.

Rumors by Model

iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max

  • Similar overall design to the iPhone 17 Pro models, with a more uniform finish across the aluminum and glass back.

  • Smaller Dynamic Island, said to be achieved by Apple moving some Face ID components beneath the screen.

  • More efficient LTPO+ displays.

  • A20 Pro chip manufactured using TSMC's 2nm process.

  • 12GB of RAM and 256GB starting storage.

  • Variable-aperture main camera for greater control over light and background blur – although reports disagree on whether this will be exclusive to the Pro Max.

  • Possible Samsung image sensor for improved image quality and camera responsiveness.

  • Simplified Camera Control button that retains pressure sensing but removes the capacitive layer.

  • Larger battery in the Pro Max, which could well result in a slightly thicker and heavier body.

  • Possible Apple C2 modem, although U.S. models could retain Qualcomm modems for mmWave support.

  • The strongest color rumors include Dark Cherry, Light Blue, and Silver. Other rumors have suggested no Silver, and a black finish has also been suggested.

iPhone Duo (Foldable)

  • Apple's first folding iPhone, with "iPhone Duo" among the rumored names, with "iPhone Fold" and "iPhone Ultra" remaining outlying possibilities.

  • Book-style design with an approximately 5.5-inch outer display and 7.8-inch inner display.

  • Chassis measuring just 4.5mm thick when unfolded.

  • Liquid-metal hinge and an extremely inconspicuous – but not completely invisible – display crease.

  • Touch ID integrated into the Side button in lieu of Face ID.

  • Wide and Ultra Wide rear cameras, plus selfie cameras on both the outer and inner displays.

  • A20 Pro chip and an expected 12GB of RAM.

  • MagSafe charging support.

  • iPad-like multitasking, including side-by-side apps.

  • Silver/white and a very dark indigo finish among the rumored colors.

Apple Watch Series 12

  • Familiar design, with no major change to the case expected.

  • Faster S12 chip and improvements to health and fitness tracking.

  • Possible return of a ceramic case, with white and dark gray versions reportedly tested.

  • Continuous heart-rate monitoring throughout the day among the features Apple is testing, along with a new "Readiness" app.

  • More wellness metrics through revamped Health and Fitness experiences.

Apple Watch Ultra 4

  • Similar design to the Apple Watch Ultra 3.

  • Faster S12 chip and related health and fitness improvements.

  • Likely continuous heart-rate collection if the Series 12 gets it.

  • Possible expansion of satellite capabilities, including Apple Maps and photo sharing in Messages.

AirPods 5 (Possible)

  • Two versions expected, with and without active noise cancellation.

  • Possible H3 chip for better sound quality and lower latency.

iPhone 18 (Regular)

The regular iPhone 18 is not expected to feature tomorrow. Apple is reportedly moving that model's launch to spring 2027, when the iPhone 18e and iPhone Air 2 are also expected to debut as part of a new split-year release schedule.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Pricing Expectations

Higher memory costs could push up prices for both Pro models this year. Based on TrendForce's forecasts for the Pro models and Bloomberg's latest reporting on the foldable, the possible U.S. starting prices are:

Model Estimated Starting Price
iPhone 18 Pro $1,249–$1,299
iPhone 18 Pro Max $1,349–$1,399
iPhone Duo $2,199 (rumored)

Remember that these are estimates, with the Pro figures representing possible prices sourced from TrendForce's projected increases. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman today reported that the device will have a $2,000 starting price for the foldable with 256GB of storage, with some upgraded storage configurations potentially approaching $3,000. Reliable figures for every storage tier are not available.

When Can I Pre-order iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo?

iPhone 18 Pro pre-orders could begin on Saturday, September 12, at midnight Pacific Time / 3 a.m. Eastern Time. The potential Saturday opening would avoid September 11, similar to Apple's approach in 2015.

The foldable's schedule is less certain, with some reports of manufacturing challenges potentially delaying a release until the fourth quarter of 2026. Indeed, Gurman's latest report claims the device will go on sale "as early as October."

When Do iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone Duo Launch?

Friday, September 18 is the most likely release date for the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. It's our best educated guess, but we believe that is when deliveries and retail availability will begin.

As already mentioned, reports remain divided on the foldable's launch schedule. There's still a possibility that its unveiling tomorrow may precede its arrival in stores by several weeks or more.

iPhone Ultra Touch ID 'Confirmed' in iOS 27? Not So Fast

Apple's iPhone Ultra is widely expected to feature Touch ID instead of Face ID, but references found in the iOS 27 beta probably shouldn't be treated as proof. Code sleuth pdfu has found Car Key strings that mention an iPhone in the same string as both Ultra Wideband and Touch ID, which they say "confirms" Touch ID for the foldable since "all existing iPhone models with an UWB chip, starting with iPhone 11, use Face ID."

However, Apple's codebase often has Touch ID references that aren't tied to specific hardware. Legacy terminology can also linger for years, with references to discontinued products like iPod still appearing in recent iOS code. So while Touch ID is expected, this detail doesn't confirm it.
