Samsung Mocks iPhone Duo

Samsung took to social media today to mock the iPhone Duo while Apple announced the device.

In a series of sarcastic posts that did not explicitly mention Apple or the iPhone Duo, Samsung made comments like "Let us know when you're done reheating our leftovers" and "Was it exciting? No. Did it happen? Yes."

Samsung used an #ItsTimeToSwitch hashtag in some of its posts.

Launching on Friday, October 23, the iPhone Duo will compete with Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 and other foldable devices already on the market. Apple will begin accepting pre-orders for the iPhone Duo on Friday, October 16, with U.S. pricing starting at $1,999 for a model with 256GB of storage, compared to $1,899 for the Galaxy Z Fold8.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max: Here's How Much RAM Each Has

Apple does not advertise the amount of RAM included in the iPhone 18 Pro models, but MacRumors has confirmed this info in the latest version of Xcode 27.

Here is how much RAM is in each new iPhone model:
  • iPhone 18 Pro: 12GB

  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: 12GB
Xcode does not yet support the iPhone Duo, but that device has the same A20 Pro chip as the iPhone 18 Pro models, so it should have 12GB of RAM too.

iPhone 17 Pro models also have 12GB of RAM, so there is no increase vs. the previous generation:
  • iPhone 17: 8GB

  • iPhone Air: 12GB

  • iPhone 17 Pro: 12GB

  • iPhone 17 Pro Max: 12GB
Apple is still being impacted by an industrywide RAM chip shortage, which has led the company to raise prices on many products in recent months. In the U.S., the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max start at $1,199 and $1,299, respectively, which is a $100 increase to the starting price compared to the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Apple said the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will be available to pre-order starting Saturday, September 12 at 5 a.m. Pacific Time in the U.S. and many other countries. The devices are set to launch the following week, on Friday, September 18.

Apple Announces iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max

Apple today unveiled the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which look very similar to the iPhone 17 Pro models but have several upgrades.

iPhone 18 Pro still has a 6.3-inch display, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max sticks with a 6.9-inch display. As was widely rumored, both devices have a smaller Dynamic Island that can show up to three Live Activities at once.

The devices are equipped with the A20 Pro chip and feature longer battery life. Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro matches the battery life of the iPhone 17 Pro Max with up to 24 hours of typical usage per full charge, while the iPhone 18 Pro Max has the biggest generational leap in battery life ever with up to 30 hours of usage per charge.

Apple says the iPhone 18 Pro can charge to 50% in just 15 minutes.

A20 Pro has a 6-core GPU, a 7-core GPU, and a 32-core Neural Engine. Apple says sustained performance is up to 40% faster compared to the A19 Pro chip.

The vapor chamber cooling system is three times as large in the iPhone 18 Pro models as it is in the iPhone 17 Pro models for improved thermal management.

The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera on both the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max has variable aperture, allowing for greater control of depth of field. In a darker environment, for example, the lens opens wider to let in more light.

iPhone 18 Pro color options include Black, Silver, Glacier, and Burgundy. The rear aluminum and Ceramic Shield glass area are now more color matched.

In the U.S., the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, and the iPhone 18 Pro Max starts at $1,299. For the first time, a 2TB storage capacity is available.

Pre-orders begin Saturday, September 12, ahead of a launch on Friday, September 18.

Apple Shares Mysterious Teaser Video Before 'iPhone Duo' Event Today

Apple will be holding an event today starting at 10 a.m. Pacific Time, with the company expected to unveil new iPhones and much more.

Ahead of the event, Apple's new CEO John Ternus just shared a mysterious teaser video. The short clip appears to show a beam of light that is shining onto the edge of an iPhone. The light is coming from a hexagonal shape that changes size, which could hint at the iPhone 18 Pro's rumored mechanical aperture upgrade.

The main 48-megapixel Fusion camera on the iPhone 18 Pro and/or iPhone 18 Pro Max is rumored to have a variable aperture, which would allow users to control the amount of light that passes through the camera's lens and reaches the sensor. This would provide greater control over depth of field. However, given that iPhones have smaller image sensors due to smartphone size constraints, it is unclear exactly how meaningful this improvement would be.

β€” John Ternus (@johnternus) September 9, 2026

In addition to the iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple is expected to unveil its first-ever foldable iPhone today. The device is reportedly named iPhone Duo.

Ternus became Apple's CEO on September 1, succeeding Tim Cook, who is now the company's executive chairman. Ternus joined Apple in 2001, became a VP of hardware engineering in 2013, and became SVP of hardware engineering in 2021.

MacRumors is in attendance at Steve Jobs Theater and will be providing live coverage of Apple's event today, so stay tuned. It will be a very busy day.

Apple Likely to Announce Beats 360 This Month

Apple today released a firmware update (4A203) for its upcoming Beats 360 headphones, suggesting that a launch is approaching. With the firmware now available, it seems likely that Apple will announce the Beats 360 at some point in September.

Beats 360 have already leaked across multiple regulatory databases and retail listings over the past several months, and soccer stars like Lamine Yamal and Antonee Robinson were spotted wearing them around the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

MacRumors was first to report on the Beats 360 name last month after the headphones appeared in various retail listings on Amazon and other reseller websites, some of which have since been removed. The listings revealed that the headphones will be available in Black, Cloud, Sky, and Pink, at a minimum. There will also be interchangeable Performance Knit and UltraPlush ear cushions and headbands that come in those same four colors, plus extra options like Volt and Navy, allowing you to create your own personalized look.

Beats 360 have a unique design with some similarities to the AirPods Max, including telescoping headband arms that smoothly extend and stay in place to maintain the desired fit. One of the product listings said the over-ear headphones offer up to 1.75Γ— more noise cancellation than the Beats Studio Pro that came out in 2023.

The listing also said that the Beats 360 are Apple's first-ever sweat-resistant and water-resistant over-ear headphones, with an IPX4 rating.

Other features and specs mentioned in the listing included all-day battery life, a fold-flat design, and a high-fidelity acoustic platform. According to code uncovered by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris, the Beats 360 will support hands-free Siri, meaning that you can say "Hey Siri" or simply "Siri" to activate the assistant.

Beats 360 will come with a set of interchangeable Performance Knit cushions and a woven ripstop fabric carrying case, but customers will need to supply their own USB-C charging cable and power adapter. One listing said the headphones will be priced at $299.99 in the U.S., but we cannot confirm if that information is accurate.

Beats Studio Pro are regularly priced at $349.99.

It is unclear exactly when Apple plans to officially unveil the Beats 360, but with all of these leaks across regulatory databases, athlete teasers, retail listings, and firmware updates, an announcement this month seems likely.

Apple Watch SE 3 is Suddenly Unavailable

Nearly all configurations of the Apple Watch SE 3 are suddenly "unavailable" on Apple's online store in the U.S. and other countries we checked, for reasons unknown.

Apple is holding an event this Wednesday to announce new iPhones and Apple Watches, but an Apple Watch SE 4 was not expected tomorrow, as new generations of the Apple Watch SE have never been released in back-to-back years. The original Apple Watch SE debuted in September 2020, the Apple Watch SE 2 arrived in September 2022, and the Apple Watch SE 3 was announced in September 2025.

Is this a sign that an Apple Watch SE 4 will be announced tomorrow after all, or is this simply a temporary issue that will be resolved soon? We shall see.

Apple to Introduce All-New 'Readiness' App Tomorrow

Apple plans to announce an all-new "Readiness" app during its "Surprise and Shine" event this Wednesday, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

In a social media post today, Gurman said the "Readiness" app will be a "variant" of the existing Vitals app on the Apple Watch. "The idea is to better compete with software from Whoop and Oura," he said. For example, Oura's smart rings offer a daily "Readiness Score" from 0 to 100 that shows how prepared your body is for the day.

Introduced on watchOS 11, the Vitals app consolidates your key health metrics, including your average heart rate, respiratory rate, blood oxygen, wrist temperature, and sleep duration from the previous night. Based on many of the same metrics, the Readiness app would likely show you how recovered your body is for activity.

Evidence of the "Readiness" app in watchOS 27 beta code was already discovered a few days ago by a MacRumors forum member known as "pdfu."

The app will be unveiled alongside the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4. Gurman previously reported that both of these new models will feature continuous heart rate sensing, regardless of whether you are actively exercising.

Apple Acquires Startup Working on 'Breakthrough Sensing Technology'

Earlier this year, Apple acquired California-based startup Sonera, according to a notice published today on the European Commission's website.

Sonera previously announced that it had developed "breakthrough sensing technology" that "non-invasively measures magnetic fields" generated by the brain and body. The company said its technology can analyze neural data without direct skin contact, giving it an advantage over traditional electrical sensing techniques.

"This proprietary technology holds the key to making brain activity as easy to measure as heart rate, temperature, and other physiological signals," said Sonera, in a 2023 press release. The company said its technology was "poised to enable an entirely new class of consumer wearables and experiences based on muscle activity."

Sonera said it had developed a biomagnetic chip that would enable use cases such as "advanced prosthetics control, continuous monitoring of neuromuscular conditions, discovery of disease biomarkers, and sport performance tracking," so this acquisition could pave the way for future Apple Watch health and accessibility features.

iPhone Duo?

While the long-awaited foldable iPhone has often been referred to as the iPhone Ultra or the iPhone Fold in rumors, another name making the rounds is iPhone Duo.

There is no actual evidence that Apple will use the iPhone Duo name, but it is certainly a possibility. Apple has used Duo branding in the past, for its PowerBook Duo line of laptops in the 1990s and for its MagSafe Duo Charger in the early 2020s.

In this case, Duo would refer to the foldable iPhone's dual screens.

Microsoft released a dual-screen Android smartphone called the Surface Duo in 2020 that has since been discontinued, and Intel had its popular lines of Core Duo and Core 2 Duo processors in the 2000s, so perhaps Apple will want to avoid using Duo branding due to that history. However, competing companies have devices with Ultra and Fold branding too, such as Samsung's Galaxy S26 Ultra and Galaxy Z Fold8.

In April, former Macworld reporter Filipe EspΓ³sito cited a source familiar with Apple's plans who said the foldable iPhone will be named iPhone Ultra. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman said many Apple employees refer to the device as the iPhone Ultra within the company, but he has never firmly reported that it will be the official name.

Apple has used Ultra branding for the Apple Watch Ultra, CarPlay Ultra, and its M1 Ultra, M2 Ultra, M3 Ultra, and M5 Ultra chips.

Apple is expected to unveil its foldable iPhone during its event next week, so we will soon find out whether the device is named iPhone Ultra, iPhone Fold, iPhone Duo, or something else. Share your own guesses in the comments section.

Apple Just Fixed TestFlight

As noted by MacStories editor-in-chief Federico Viticci, TestFlight now shows recent betas by default again for all users.

In July, Apple updated TestFlight with a search field for quickly finding apps that you are beta testing, but some users started to see their apps presented in alphabetical order. It is not entirely clear if this was a bug or an intentional change, but many users did not like it, and TestFlight version 4.3.1 reverses course. The update with the fix is available in the App Store now. The search field remains.

iPhone 20 Rumored to Have Biggest Revamp Since iPhone X

Apple plans to release a special 20th-anniversary iPhone next year with the biggest design changes since the iPhone X, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Unveiled by Steve Jobs in 2007, the iPhone turns 20 next year. To mark the occasion, the report said Apple plans to release a 20th-anniversary iPhone with "curved glass around all corners and edges" and thinner bezels around the screen.

"It will be the biggest overhaul to what is now the iPhone Pro line since the iPhone X," the report said, but no further details were provided.

Released in 2017, the iPhone X was the first iPhone with Face ID. The removal of the Touch ID button allowed for the iPhone X's screen to extend more towards the edges of the device compared to previous models. It seems like the 20th-anniversary iPhone would go a step further than this by truly having the screen wrap around the corners and edges of the device, for a seemingly all-glass appearance.

Rumors about the 20th-anniversary iPhone have gone back and forth, but based on Gurman's latest reporting today, the device seems to be in the works still. However, it remains to be seen if Apple can fully achieve the ambitious design changes that are apparently in development, or if plans for the device will ultimately be scaled back.

It is apparently not a good day for AI chatbots, as ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok are all down or experiencing issues for many users.

OpenAI's status page acknowledges issues across ChatGPT and Codex, while Grok's website notes that it is currently experiencing issues as well. Likewise, Anthropic's status page indicates Claude is experiencing elevated errors.

All of the companies are investigating the outages.

Update: The chatbots are in the process of coming back online.

'MacBook Ultra' Rumored to Have M5 Ultra Chip Option

Apple reportedly plans to release MacBook Pro models with OLED displays by early 2027, and Omdia analyst David Hsieh has predicted that the laptops will have an M5 Ultra chip option.

Given that these MacBook Pro models might actually be branded as "MacBook Ultra" models, it would be fitting if there were configurations with the M5 Ultra chip available. But keep your expectations low, as there has never been a MacBook with an Ultra chip, and a previous report from Bloomberg's Mark Gurman only mentioned M5 Pro and M5 Max chips for these laptops.

iOS 27 Introduces New 'iPhone Handoff' Feature

Apple has added a new "iPhone Handoff" feature to iOS 27 that will allow you to switch between two iPhones while using the same phone number on each device.

This functionality was briefly mentioned during the WWDC 2026 keynote in June, on a slide that listed hundreds of new features coming in iOS 27 and corresponding software updates, but Apple never shared any further details at the time.

MacRumors forum member pdfu today shared a video that demonstrates how the feature will work, using two simulated iPhones running in Xcode 27's Device Hub.

"iPhone Handoff" can be set up from the Settings app, under the Cellular menu. During the setup process, you can choose which iPhone you want to be the main device that you use most often and which one you want to be the companion device.

Apple says a user's main eSIM will remain on the main iPhone, while the companion iPhone will receive a companion eSIM, and this will enable you to switch between the devices back and forth while using the same phone number.

All cellular settings are managed on the main iPhone, and location sharing is based on whichever iPhone is actively using the phone number.

In addition to needing two iPhones running iOS 27, "iPhone Handoff" will seemingly require carrier support. The forum post mentions that T-Mobile in the U.S. and Deutsche Telekom in Germany might be among the first carriers to offer the feature.

Following three months of beta testing, iOS 27 is expected to be released later this month, so we will likely hear more about this feature soon.

iPhone Driver's License Feature in Apple Wallet Launches in Oklahoma

Starting today, Oklahoma residents can add a digital version of their driver's license to the Apple Wallet app on the iPhone and Apple Watch. The digital ID can be used to display proof of identity or age at TSA checkpoints in select airports, at select businesses, and in select apps, but the number of places where it is accepted is still quite limited.

Oklahoma is the 16th state to implement support for Apple Wallet IDs in the U.S., joining Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Virginia, and West Virginia. The feature is also available in Puerto Rico and works with Japan's My Number Card.

Apple has also been preparing for the feature to go live in North Carolina and Utah in the coming months, and years ago it announced that Connecticut, Kentucky, and Mississippi were committed to launching the feature at some point.

To set up the feature, open the Wallet app on the iPhone and tap on the plus sign in the top-right corner. Next, tap on Driver's License and ID Cards, select Oklahoma from the list, and follow the on-screen steps to complete the process. Then, you can present your digital ID where it is accepted without handing over your device.

You can present an Apple Wallet ID where accepted by simply tapping your iPhone or Apple Watch on an identity reader. Then, you will be able to view the specific information being requested by the TSA or business. Only after authorizing with Face ID or Touch ID is the requested identity information released from your device.

As mentioned, you do not need to unlock, show, or hand over your device to present an Apple Wallet ID in person, ensuring user privacy.

Apple Wallet IDs are generally not accepted by law enforcement, so carrying a physical ID is still legally required for traffic stops. In addition, the number of businesses that accept Apple Wallet IDs is still quite small. At least for now, Apple Wallet IDs are designed to be a convenient alternative where they are accepted.

Apple Wallet IDs are accepted at TSA checkpoints in more than 250 airports across the U.S. for domestic travel, according to Apple.

macOS Golden Gate Seems to Hint at MacBook Pro With OLED Display

As noted by Broadcasts developer Steven Troughton-Smith, many Liquid Glass interface elements on the macOS Golden Gate beta have an even glassier appearance on certain high-end OLED displays with HDR support than they do on ordinary displays.

Apple reportedly plans to release new MacBook Pro or "MacBook Ultra" models with an OLED display by early 2027, so it is likely that macOS Golden Gate has these Liquid Glass enhancements in preparation for those laptops.
