Firefox

New

  • High Dynamic Range (HDR) video playback is now available on Windows - this feature needs HDR mode enabled for the display in Windows Settings - Display. Laptop displays that only offer "HDR video streaming" are not supported at this time. Some videos recorded on phones in certain orientations are currently not shown as HDR.

  • Containers let you keep separate parts of your online life (work, shopping, personal, banking) logged into different accounts in the same browser window, but keep your cookies and ad tracking isolated inside each container.

  • Share any open page with a QR code. Right-click a tab, select Share > Generate QR Code. Great for posters, invitations, banners, and other printed materials.

Screenshot of a QR code generated for a page

  • It is now possible to merge multiple PDFs by dragging a PDF into the PDF sidebar.

  • It is now possible to add images as new pages within PDFs using the Firefox PDF editor.

  • Quickly pick and copy a color from any page by typing "pick color", "color picker", or "eyedropper" in the address bar and selecting the "Pick a color" quick action.

Screenshot of the Pick Color quick action being triggered from the address bar

  • Added support for Apple's system-wide full-screen keyboard command (Globe-F).

  • Firefox now verifies and displays Qualified Website Authentication Certificates (QWACs) in accordance with eIDAS regulations.

  • Added improved support for videos with overlays so users can more easily access video actions from context menus.

  • Firefox now highlights the location permission icon in red whenever a website has access to your location. The permission icon is also now visible on search results pages where it was previously hidden.

Screenshot of the red geolocation warning in the address bar when the Geolocation API is being used

  • Smart Window:

    • See and choose AI models directly from the Smart Window assistant.
    • New Tab now includes a familiar address bar for typing websites and searching the web.

Screenshot of a QR code generated for a page

This feature is part of a progressive roll out.

What is a progressive roll out?

Certain new Firefox features are released gradually. This means some users will see the feature before everyone does. This approach helps to get early feedback to catch bugs and improve behavior quickly, meaning more Firefox users overall have a better experience.

Firefox Labs

  • Firefox Labs can now be opened quickly by typing "labs" or "experiment" in the address bar and selecting the Open Firefox Labs quick action.

Screenshot of the Firefox Labs quick action being triggered from the address bar

  • Firefox now offers experimental support for the new JPEG XL image format, which generally provides better compression than WebP, JPEG, PNG, and GIF and is designed to supersede them. You can enable it from the Firefox Labs panel in Settings.

Fixed

Changed

  • Extensions can no longer access local files by default. Users can grant or revoke this access via the new "Access local files on your computer" permission, separate from "Access your data for all websites".

  • Local Network Access restrictions are now enabled by default for all users. Firefox requires websites to request permission before connecting to devices on your local network or to apps and services on your device.

  • Outdated cookie settings have been removed from the Settings UI. Users still in that mode should switch to default behavior "Isolate cross-site cookies". More information

Enterprise

Developer

  • A new "Local Mode" setting in the options panel allows developers to load local directories via custom origins. This simplifies testing for APIs that do not function over standard file:// URLs, removing the need to run a local web server. Multiple directory mappings are supported.

Web Platform

  • Firefox now supports a limited subset of the non-standard ::-webkit-scrollbar pseudo-element to improve web compatibility:

    • Rules with non-zero width/height disable overlay scrollbars for the affected container.
    • display: none on ::-webkit-scrollbar behaves like scrollbar-width: none, hiding the scrollbar.
    • @supports selector(::-webkit-scrollbar) now evaluates to true.
    • Full styling capabilities (colors, border-radius, etc.) are intentionally not supported.
  • The vertical-align property was converted into a shorthand for baseline-source, alignment-baseline, and baseline-shift in Firefox 149. Now, alignment-baseline supports the new keywords alphabetic, ideographic, central, mathematical, and hanging, extending the variety of baselines to choose for alignment.

  • Implemented the new popover=hint spec, which removes a series of inconsistent and unexpected behaviors.

  • The circle() and ellipse() functions accept two new keywords closest-corner and farthest-corner for their radial size.

  • The newly added Error.stackTraceLimit property allows to set the maximal depth of the captured JavaScript error stack as a performance optimization.

  • Developers can now use the text import attribute to import text files using the module system.

  • The Picture In Picture API exposes a way for web developers to make use of user agent Picture-In-Picture functionality.

  • The Intl.LocaleInfo proposal adds the ability to query Locale information, such as week data (first day in a week, weekend start day, weekend end day), text direction and hour cycle used in the Locale.

  • The MediaCapabilities.decodingInfo() and MediaCapabilities.encodingInfo() methods now accept the "webrtc" configuration type. This allows a site to query whether a given audio or video configuration can be decoded or encoded for WebRTC and whether doing so will be smooth and/or powerEfficient.

  • HTTP Compression Dictionaries is enabled via rollout in 153, it will be made permanent in a future release.Β  This can greatly reduce network traffic size for sites that use it.

  • Added an option to show the playback timer next to the seekbar instead of inside the statusbar. By default it is placed at the right side. There is an advanced option to place it at the left side. Tip: seekbar height can be adjusted in the options. Timer text size is scaled accordingly.
  • Added a new customizable viewing preset (hotkey 4). By default this hides the menu and statusbar compared to the normal viewing preset (hotkey 3).
  • Added an advanced option to specify the default viewing preset when starting the player. By default it remembers to last used
    viewing mode.
  • Added a submenu to playlist context menu for adjusting the playlist location.

Fixes:

  • A few crash fixes, bug fixes and small improvements.

OpenSubtitles download error 406

Subtitle downloads from OpenSubtitles may fail depending on time of day. This is due to our daily download quota being exceeded. Current amount of donations is barely enough to pay for the existing quota. So it is unlikely that quota can be increased and situation will get worse over time.
If you create an OpenSubtitles account and configure it in MPC-HC settings then you may be able to bypass the quota.

Overview of features

A lot of people seem to be unaware of some of the awesome features that have been added to MPC-HC in the past years. Here is a list of useful options and features that everyone should know about:

  • Play HDR video
This requires using either MPC Video Renderer (MPCVR) or madVR.
These renderers can be selected here:
    Options > Playback > Output
With other video renderers, the colors will be wrong!
MPCVR is included and is the recommended and default renderer for modern systems. MadVR needs to be installed separately. MPCVR also supports Dolby Vision. MadVR does not.
For optimal performance you should change the hardware decoder to D3D11 in LAV Video Decoder settings when using MPCVR on Windows 10/11, because this renderer uses DirectX11.
  • The installer of MPC-HC is very basic (and that will not change).
I therefore recommend using K-Lite Codec Pack. That includes MPC-HC and other essential components. It has a very advanced installation that can automatically create file associations, and helps you with easy configuration of important MPC-HC settings, such as preferred subtitle language(s). It also does automatic configuration of renderer and hardware decoding, for best performance and HDR support.
The Standard version should be sufficient for most people. Use Full version of you like to use MadVR.
  • Modern GUI Theme (Dark or Light) or the old classic theme
Options > Player > User Interface
It is also possible to change the height of the seekbar and size of the toolbar buttons.
Plus there are options to show audio/video details in the statusbar, such as codec and resolution.
  • Customizable toolbar buttons
You can add/remove/re-order the player buttons.
There are also several different toolbar designs to choose from.
  • Video preview on the seekbar
Options > Player > User Interface > Hover type
  • Ability to search for subtitles
    Press D for manual search.
Or enable automatic search in: Options > Subtitles > Misc
  • Adjust playback speed
Menu > Play > Playback rate
The buttons in the player that control playback rate take a 2x step by default. This can be customized to smaller values (like 10%):
Options > Playback > Speed step
If you have 1000 IQ you can even do smart stuff like setting playback rate change to mouse right-click + scrollwheel:
    Options > Player > Mouse
Adjusting playback speed works best with MPC Audio Renderer or SaneAR. These audio renderers have automatic pitch correction, while DirectSound does not.
Options > Playback > Output > Audio Renderer
  • MPC-HC can remember recently played files and also their playback position, so you can resume playback from when you left
    Options > Player > History
  • You can quickly seek through a video with Ctrl + Mouse Scrollwheel.
  • You can jump to next/previous file in a folder by pressing PageUp/PageDown.
  • You can right-click on the framestep button to step backwards. Some other buttons also have right-click actions, such as closing file by right-clicking stop.
  • You can perform automatic actions at end of file. For example to go to next file or close player.
Options > Playback > After Playback (permanent setting)
Menu > Play > After Playback (for current file only)
  • A-B repeat
You can loop a segment of a video. Press [ and ] to set start and stop markers.
  • You can rotate/flip/mirror/stretch/zoom the video
    Menu > View > Pan&Scan
This is also easily done with hotkeys (see below).
  • There are lots of keyboard hotkeys and mouse actions to control the player. They can be customized as well.
    Options > Player > Keys
Tip: there is a search box above the table.
  • You can hide GUI elements even in windowed mode
Options > User Interface > Hide Windowed Controls
That hides most GUI elements during playback. To show them simply move your mouse to bottom of window.
You can even hide everything except the video by pressing 1 (restore normal view with 3).
  • You can seek inside the playlist by simply typing text (when playlist window has the mouse focus).
  • MPC-HC also supports Blu-ray playback.
Only limitation is that you need to use a decrypting tool.
And it also does not support Blu-ray menus, but you can use the navigate menu in the player to select the content to play.
  • You can stream videos directly from Youtube and many other video websites
Put yt-dlp.exe in the MPC-HC installation folder.
Then you can open website URLs in the player: Menu > File > Open File/URL
You can even download those videos: Menu > File > Save a copy
Tip: to be able to download in best quality with yt-dlp, it is recommended to also put ffmpeg.exe in the MPC-HC folder.
Several YDL configuration options are found here: Options > Advanced
This includes an option to specify the location of yt-dlp.exe in case you don't want to put it in MPC-HC folder.
Note 1: You also need to install Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86)
Note 2: For optimal Youtube support you may also need to put deno.exe in same folder as yt-dlp.
Note 3: yt-dlp nightly build (very latest version made daily)
    Note 4: yt-dlp windows7 compatible build
  • Besides all these (new) features, there have also been many bugfixes and internal improvements in the player in the past years that give better performance and stability. It also has updated internal codecs. Support was added for CUE sheets, WebVTT subtitles, etc.
  • You should really take a few minutes to look through all the options pages if you are a new user or if you are upgrading from a very old version. Don't forget the advanced options page.

Paint.NET 5.2 Alpha (build 9688)

This new alpha build has a quality of life improvement for the Move tools, support for CICP metadata, and good quality HDR->SDR tone mapping when opening HDR images with supported file types (including plugins).

You can read more about the CICP and HDR tone mapping support at https://x.com/rickbrewPDN/status/2072357433390047252 or https://bsky.app/profile/rickbrew.bsky.social/post/3mplx7ujotk2a

You can read more about 5.2 and what it includes by reading the release notes for the first alpha.

Change Log

Changes since 5.2 Alpha (build 9650):

  • Changed: The Move Selection and Move Selected Pixels tools will now behave more intuitively when using constrained resizing (when holding shift). The aspect ratio that was used for a constrained resize used to be β€œlocked in” when the selection was first drawn. The aspect ratio is now picked up when you start a constrained resize, and remembered until a non-constrained resize is performed.
  • Added CICP metadata and color management support to the imaging frameworkΒ
    • See the CicpColorSpace struct in the PaintDotNet.Imaging namespace.
    • It has a CanColorTransformFrom property, indicating that it can be used as the source color space for the IImagingFactory.CreateColorTransformedBitmap or IBitmapSource.CreateColorTransformer extension methods.
    • It also has a CanCreateColorContext property that indicates when it is possible to create an IColorContext directly (ICC profiles can’t be generated for all CICP combinations) with the IImagingFactory.CreateColorContext(CicpColorSpace) extension method.
    • These can then be used by a FileType to provide a compatible image (β€œdocument”). Paint.NET’s color management is based on ICC color profiles, and some CICP color spaces (those involving PQ or HLG) cannot be expressed as an ICC color profile. Those images can, however, be transformed to an ICC-compatible color space with the aforementioned extension methods.
  • Added HDR support to the new FileType plugin system
    • An image is tagged as HDR at load time via the IFileTypeDocument.Metadata.Hdr metadata section. Set IsHdrDocument to true, and optionally specify luminance data. The pixel format must be floating point (PixelFormats.Rgba64Half or PixelFormats.Rgba128Float), and the color context must be linearized.
    • Paint.NET does not yet support HDR editing, so it will convert the image to SDR with appropriate, high quality tone mapping.
  • Added CICP support for AVIF, JPEG XL, and PNG.
  • Added HDR tone mapping support for AVIF, HEIC, JPEG XL, JPEG XR, and PNG. If the image file being opened is HDR then it will be converted to SDR in an appropriate manner. Eventually Paint.NET will support HDR editing, this conversion process will go away, and the FileType plugins won’t even need to be updated.
  • Added Rgb64, Rgb64Half, and Rgb128Float pixel formats for the imaging framework.
  • Added a /disableCompositionSwapChain command-line parameter. This disables the use of Windows.UI.Composition, and should enable easier progress on the WINE effort.
  • Fixed: When right-clicking on an image tab at the top, and then clicking on Open Containing Folder, two Explorer windows were being opened.
  • Added a note in the installer about the new website address (https://www.paint.net). You can read more about it here: https://x.com/rickbrewPDN/status/2060397901650825238 or https://bsky.app/profile/rickbrew.bsky.social/post/3mmz73u6lzs2t
