Banks and Credit Unions to Team Up Against Apple Pay Fees

25 September 2026 om 21:22
An antitrust lawsuit accusing Apple of blocking tap-to-pay competition is moving forward and will see banks and credit unions able to band together to sue Apple.

U.S. District Judge Jeffrey White this week certified a class in the lawsuit. It will include any U.S. entities that issued any payment card enabled for Apple Pay and paid Apple a fee for β€ŒApple Payβ€Œ transactions on that payment card. He also denied a motion from Apple to exclude expert testimony that plaintiff attorneys allege offers proof Apple has monopoly power over the mobile wallet market.

First filed in 2022, the suit claims Apple illegally collects up to $1 billion annually in fees by preventing rivals from accessing the iPhone's NFC chip to build mobile wallets that would compete with β€ŒApple Payβ€Œ. When an iPhone user buys something with a card linked to β€ŒApple Payβ€Œ, the card issuer has to pay Apple a 0.15 percent fee for credit cards and half a cent for debit cards, according to the lawsuit. If you make a $1,000 purchase via β€ŒApple Payβ€Œ, Apple collects $1.50 from the card issuer.

The complaint alleges that Apple forces card issuers to pay fees by making β€ŒApple Payβ€Œ the only tap-to-pay option. It points to Google's Android, which supports multiple wallets and does not collect a fee from card issuers for contactless payments. It suggests Apple would not be able to continue to charge "substantial fees" if it were forced to support other mobile wallets on Apple devices.

Apple has changed its policies since the lawsuit was filed. As of iOS 18.1, developers are able to offer NFC contactless payments in their apps. Developers have access to the NFC chip in the United States, Canada, Australia, Brazil, Japan, New Zealand, the UK, the European Economic Area, and many other countries.

Attorneys are seeking repayment of the fees card issuers have paid and injunctive relief to "put an end to Apple's policies."

25 September 2026 om 20:17
Earlier this week, Amazon knocked the price of the previous generation Apple Watch Ultra 3 down to $599.97, from $799.00. This $199 markdown quickly disappeared, but now we're seeing a new Ultra 3 model (Black with Black Ocean Band) hit this new all-time low price.

Note: MacRumors is an affiliate partner with some of these vendors. When you click a link and make a purchase, we may receive a small payment, which helps us keep the site running.

Additionally, there's a $199 markdown on the Black Apple Watch Ultra 3 with Black Milanese Loop (Large) on Amazon. You can get this model for $699.97, down from $899.00. Delivery dates are slipping into October for some of these devices.

These Ultra 3 deals arrive in the wake of the recent launch of the Apple Watch Ultra 4, which does have some smaller discounts on Amazon right now. You can get both the Natural and Black colors for $779.99 in several band options, down from $799.00.

Apple Code Confirms iPad 12 Specs: A19, 8GB RAM, N1, C1X Modem

25 September 2026 om 20:01
The next low-cost iPad will be equipped with an A19 chip, C1X modem, N1 networking chip, and 8GB RAM, according to details found in Apple's code by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris.

We've heard some of these same specifications in prior rumors, so this is more of a confirmation than a new leak. The β€ŒiPadβ€Œ 11 has an A16 chip, so the upgrade to the A19 in the 12th-generation β€ŒiPadβ€Œ will bring a noticeable improvement in performance. More importantly, the A19 supports Apple Intelligence, so the β€ŒiPadβ€Œ 12 will have all the β€ŒApple Intelligenceβ€Œ and Siri AI features missing from the β€ŒiPadβ€Œ 11.

The β€ŒiPadβ€Œ 11 has 6GB RAM, but 8GB RAM is the minimum for β€ŒApple Intelligenceβ€Œ, and the RAM boost will also speed things up.

Apple's C1X modem supports sub–6GHz 5G networks, and it is more efficient than the Qualcomm modem used in the existing β€ŒiPadβ€Œ. The addition of the N1 networking chip will bring support for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

Though not included in the code, it's possible the β€ŒiPadβ€Œ 12 will be available in new colors.

There is no word on when Apple will release the new β€ŒiPadβ€Œ, and at this point, we're not expecting it until spring 2027. The current β€ŒiPadβ€Œ is priced starting at $449 after a June 2026 price hike, and the new model will likely have the same starting price.

There's no low-cost β€ŒiPadβ€Œ coming this year, but Apple is expected to refresh the iPad mini before the end of October. We discovered new details about the β€ŒiPad miniβ€Œ just this morning. It will have an A20 Pro chip, a new speaker system, and a landscape front-facing camera. Prior rumors say it will feature an OLED display as the main upgrade.

We also found official images of the Apple TV 4K and the HomePod mini, including its colors. The β€ŒHomePod miniβ€Œ will come in green, pink, blue, white, and black.

Some iPhone 18 Pro Max Users Experiencing AT&T Cellular Issues

25 September 2026 om 19:07
A subset of iPhone 18 Pro Max users in the U.S. are experiencing issues with AT&T cellular connectivity and/or eSIM provisioning, according to complaints across the MacRumors Forums, Reddit, and the Apple Support Community.

Affected users are unable to connect to the AT&T network for phone calls, text messages, or data.

Notably, the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max is the only new iPhone released this month that is equipped with a Qualcomm cellular modem. The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all other countries. However, it is unclear if this is a contributing factor.

Apple is currently testing iOS 27.0.1, which is expected to be released next week, and hopefully it includes a carrier update that resolves these AT&T issues.

The MacRumors Show: Tyler Stalman Talks iPhone 18 Pro's Camera

25 September 2026 om 17:58
Photographer and videographer Tyler Stalman joins us on this week's episode of The MacRumors Show to examine whether the iPhone 18 Pro's camera is a compelling reason to upgrade, how its new features affect everyday shooting, and what photographers gain or give up with the iPhone Duo.

The β€ŒiPhone 18 Proβ€Œ's Main camera combines a new 48-megapixel sensor, a faster variable-aperture lens, and updated image processing. The variable aperture offers settings of Ζ’/1.48, Ζ’/1.8, Ζ’/2.8, and Ζ’/4.0. The iPhone 17 Pro has a fixed Ζ’/1.78 aperture, so the new lens's widest setting admits about 45% more light on aperture values alone, or just over half an exposure stop. Apple claims around 50% better low-light performance for the complete Main camera system.

At Ζ’/2.8 or Ζ’/4.0, people standing at different distances in a group shot can remain sharper, provided there is enough light to compensate for the smaller opening. A narrower aperture can also let video use a slower shutter speed in bright conditions, producing more natural motion blur. At Ζ’/1.48, the camera has more light for indoor photos and potentially shorter Night mode exposures. The wider opening should also reduce the need for Night mode at all in some situations. The camera defaults to Ζ’/1.8, close to the 17 Pro's fixed aperture, but the new sensor and processing still affect photos taken at that setting.

The Pro Controls add manual aperture, shutter speed, and white balance adjustments, plus a live histogram directly in the native Camera app. Users can pin their most-used settings to the top of the viewfinder, which is a major practical improvement for professionals. For example, shutter speed offers control over frozen action or intentional motion blur, while white balance can help stop greenery being made too blue by automatic settings or maintain a consistent look between video clips.

Photographic Styles 3 goes further with the ability to adjust tone and color while preserving skin tones, and new controls add Soft Skin, Glow, and Film textures, with grain that can be paired with any of them. The Film setting aims to reproduce more of an analog photograph's character, including its grain and the glow around bright highlights. The strength of the effects can be adjusted, and the style can be changed after capture. Tyler has tested the β€ŒiPhone 18 Proβ€Œ's film look against a film SLR loaded with Kodak Portra 400.

Apple Reference Image signs data from the β€ŒiPhone 18 Proβ€Œ's new Main camera sensor at capture, creating a secure digital negative that can be compared with an editable photo. Meanwhile, iOS 27's Photos tools can change perspective with Reframe, generate scenery beyond a picture's original edges with Extend, or remove larger objects with Clean Up. Reference Image leaves room for creative editing while giving photographers a way to show what the sensor captured, provided they enabled the mode before taking the shot.

Meanwhile, the iPhone Duo's camera system has a 48-megapixel Main camera with a fixed Ζ’/1.6 aperture and the same 48-megapixel Ultra Wide camera as the β€ŒiPhone 18 Proβ€Œ. Its Main camera shares a 26mm focal length, Ζ’/1.6 aperture, and Hybrid Focus Pixels with the iPhone 17e, leading some to question why Apple's most expensive iPhone appears to have camera hardware similar to an entry-level model. That said, the Duo has sensor-shift optical image stabilization, which the 17e lacks, and Apple has not disclosed enough sensor details to establish that the two phones use identical hardware.

Compared with the β€ŒiPhone 18 Proβ€Œ, the β€ŒiPhone Duoβ€Œ also lacks a dedicated Telephoto lens, variable aperture, manual Pro Controls, Reference Image, and professional formats including ProRAW and ProRes. The β€ŒiPhone Duoβ€Œ's folding design makes a different case for its camera. Smart Take can capture a group photo when everyone is posing, Kid Cue plays animations on the outer display to draw a child's attention, and Duo Preview lets subjects see a live view of a photo being taken of them with the rear camera. The phone can also stand partly open for hands-free shots.

Looking to the future, Apple is rumored to be working on a custom image sensor that could arrive as soon as next year with the 20th-anniversary iPhone.

iPad Mini With A20 Pro, New HomePod Mini Colors, and New Apple TV 4K All Just Leaked

25 September 2026 om 17:18
The next iPad mini, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K models have all leaked, just a few weeks before the devices are expected to be announced. Specifically, MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris discovered a few of Apple's official images of the devices, confirming their existence and some new features that are planned.

The most notable iPad mini details revealed in today's leak include an A20 Pro chip, a new speaker design, and a landscape front camera, while images have revealed that the next HomePod mini will be available in new colors like green and pink.

There is also evidence of an upcoming "Apple TV 4K (4th generation)" model, so it appears that a new Apple TV is finally coming soon after a four-year wait.

We have recapped all of our coverage below:October is a common month for Apple to announce products, so the new iPad mini, HomePod mini, and Apple TV 4K might be no more than a few weeks away.

iPad Mini 8 Leaked: A20 Pro Chip, Landscape Camera, and More

25 September 2026 om 17:18
Apple's next-generation iPad mini will feature the A20 Pro chip, a rearranged front-facing camera, and a new speaker system, leaked code reveals.

The information originates from Apple's own code (spotted by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris) and also shows clear product images of the new β€ŒiPad miniβ€Œ. Although images of the device only show the front, leaving any design changes of the rear or side profile unknown, there are still visible changes.

The new β€ŒiPad miniβ€Œ features a landscape front-facing camera, making it the final iPad to transition to this positioning. It also has a small groove cut out of the top of the display glass, just like the iPhone, presumably for the speaker. The volume buttons and power button remain on the top of the device.

We are not sharing the exact details of the files, but their presence in Apple's code suggests that the product is likely to launch soon.

Bloomberg's Mark Gurman previously reported that the next-generation β€ŒiPad miniβ€Œ will feature water resistance and an all new vibration-based speaker, so the icons appear to corroborate that claim.

The new β€ŒiPad miniβ€Œ is rumored to feature a slightly larger screen, an OLED display, and more. Gurman expects it to launch by the end of October.

Exclusive: First Look at HomePod Mini 2 in Three New Colors

25 September 2026 om 17:17
Apple's new HomePod mini will share the same design as the original model and come in five colors, MacRumors has found.

The information originates from Apple's own code (spotted by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris) and shows clear product images of the new models in all of their colors. The above image contains Apple's own icons, which specifically refer to a "β€ŒHomePod miniβ€Œ 2."

The new β€ŒHomePod miniβ€Œ will come in green, pink, blue, white, and black. The current model comes in yellow, orange, blue, white, and midnight. The new blue is slightly lighter than the current offering.

We are not sharing the exact details of the files, but their presence in Apple's code suggests that the product is likely to launch soon.

Apple announced the original β€ŒHomePod miniβ€Œ in October 2020 for $99. Available initially in white and space gray, the 3.3-inch speaker features a fabric-covered spherical design and a backlit touch surface for playback and volume controls. Its S5 chip powers computational audio, while a full-range driver, two passive radiators, and an acoustic waveguide deliver 360-degree sound. It also offers Siri, smart home control, multiroom audio, stereo pairing with a second β€ŒHomePod miniβ€Œ, and Intercom messages between Apple devices. Apple later raised the price to $129.

Apple has been rumored to be working on a new β€ŒHomePod miniβ€Œ model for several years. A new chip is almost certain to come to the device, along with support for Siri AI. It is expected to launch before the end of 2026.

New Apple TV 4K Leaked

25 September 2026 om 17:16
MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris has uncovered an image file from Apple for an unreleased Apple TV 4K, suggesting that a new model will finally be released soon. The image is specifically for an "Apple TV 4K (4th generation)" model.

Apple TV 4K (4th generation) image (on a gradient)

The image reveals that the Apple TV will have the same external design as the current model, with all of its upgrades expected to be internal. Rumored features include an A17 Pro chip or newer, an increased 8GB of RAM, Apple Intelligence and Siri AI support, an Apple-designed N1 chip with Wi-Fi 7 support, and a revised Siri Remote.

The current Apple TV is nearly four years old, having been announced in October 2022. It is equipped with an A15 Bionic chip and 4GB of RAM.

With an A17 Pro chip or newer, the next Apple TV will have faster performance and hardware-accelerated ray tracing for improved graphics rendering in games.

With the N1 chip, the Apple TV will support Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6.

Wi-Fi 7 has increased bandwidth, in part because it allows for data transmission over the 2.4GHz, 5GHz, and 6GHz bands simultaneously with a supported device and router. Wi-Fi 7 is theoretically up to 4Γ— faster than the current Apple TV's Wi-Fi 6, but real-world speeds are bottlenecked by internet service providers and other factors.

Siri AI will likely be the headline new feature on the next Apple TV, with tvOS 27 expected to gain a Siri app on the device. Siri AI is a much more intelligent and personalized version of Siri that can answer pretty much any question. The bump to 8GB of RAM will enable support for not only Siri AI, but some other Apple Intelligence features.

A revised Siri Remote of some kind is expected alongside the new Apple TV, but it is unclear exactly what outward changes it will have, if any.

In June, Apple raised prices on 14 products, including the Apple TV 4K. In the U.S., the Wi-Fi model with 64GB of storage now starts at $199 (up from $129), while the Wi-Fi + Ethernet model with 128GB of storage now starts at $249 (up from $149). It is unclear if the next Apple TV will maintain those prices or be even more expensive.

October is a common month for Apple to announce new products, so stay tuned, as the next Apple TV might just be days or weeks away.

Create a Custom Pass in the Wallet App on iPhone

25 September 2026 om 12:44
In iOS 27, Apple's Wallet app lets you create custom passes for things like event tickets, gift cards, loyalty cards, and more. Here's how it works.

If you have a ticket for an event and there's not a digital version available for the Wallet app, you can create one using the physical pass you have. The same goes for other cards, like a membership card, for example.

The Wallet app can use β€ŒVisual Intelligenceβ€Œ to scan your card, and it will match it to a template with corresponding fields that you can tweak before adding it to your Wallet.

Alternatively, you can create the pass manually, choose a template ("Membership," "Event," or "Custom") and then adjust the color and other details. All you need to do then is scan the barcode or QR code from your physical pass.

Each template includes relevant information like name, location, or admission type. There are 12 background colors to choose from, or seven custom backgrounds for categories like theater, music, sports, and movies.

Fields can be added or removed when creating a custom pass, with options like label, date, membership, contact, coupon code, VIN, insurance, and more, so most physical cards should be able to be stored digitally.

Here's how you create a pass with β€ŒVisual Intelligenceβ€Œ:
  1. Open the Wallet app on your iPhone and tap the + button at the top.

  2. Choose Create a Pass.
    wallet
  3. To let Visual Intelligence scan the pass, tap Continue, then take a photo of it in the next screen.

  4. After Visual Intelligence matches the pass to a template, tap Edit Pass.

  5. Use the palette icon in the bottom-left corner to change the look of the pass – you can the background colour, or use an image from your Photos library. Tap the icon in the bottom-right corner to add or remove fields.

How to Check Your Mac's Manufacture Date in macOS 27

25 September 2026 om 09:14
If you installed macOS 27 Golden Gate, here's a way to find out when your Mac was manufactured. Apple has restored access to information that effectively disappeared when it randomized its serial numbers a few years ago.

On your Mac, go to System Settings ➝ General ➝ About, then click "Regulatory Certification" under the System Report button. The certificate will show with a new "Date of Manufacture" field at the bottom.

You used to be able to decode the serial number on an Apple device to find out when and where it was made. That changed in 2021, when Apple began adopting randomized serial numbers without encoded manufacturing details.

That left owners of newer Macs with no similarly straightforward way to determine when their machine was made – until macOS 27 arrived.

The spot was made by MacRumors forum member pdfu. Another forum member said that the displayed date they saw on their certificate corresponded to their Mac's logic board rather than the date the complete machine was assembled. That logic board had been replaced though, suggesting that's where the date of manufacture is stored.

The regulatory certification first appeared during the macOS 27 beta cycle and it hasn't, to our knowledge, been highlighted by Apple.

What's Gone in macOS Golden Gate and What's Next in macOS 28

25 September 2026 om 01:06
With macOS Golden Gate, Apple phased out several legacy features and services, cutting support for older devices and accessories. More cuts are coming in macOS 28 as Apple continues to root out lingering Intel features.

Here's everything that's been dropped.

  • Support for Intel Macs - β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ is the first version of macOS that runs only on Apple silicon Macs. Intel Macs can't run it and are limited to macOS Tahoe. Apple still plans to offer security updates through fall 2028.

  • Boot Camp Assistant - Since β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ doesn't run on Intel Macs, it doesn't support Boot Camp. Apple silicon Macs require virtualization software like Parallels or VMware Fusion to run Windows.

  • Rosetta 2 (Temporarily) - Upgrading to β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ removes Rosetta, but if you have an app installed that requires it, you can reinstall it. β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ is the last version of macOS that will have full Rosetta support.

  • Apple Filing Protocol - Apple deprecated AFP back in macOS Sequoia 15.5, and there is no AFP client at all in β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ.

  • Time Capsule Backups - With no support for AFP, Time Capsule no longer works with Macs running β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ. Time Capsule requires AFP or SMBv1, but Time Machine backups now use the SMBv2 or SMBv3 protocol.

  • AirPort Utility - AirPort Utility is no longer included when you install β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ. If you had the app before updating, you can still use it, but Apple makes no guarantee that it still works. AirPort Utility lets users manage AirPort base stations like the AirPort Extreme and AirPort Express.

macOS 28, which is expected in fall 2027, will largely drop support for Rosetta 2. Most apps that rely on Rosetta will not open on Macs running macOS 28, though Apple is making an exception for some legacy games that are unmaintained.

In β€ŒmacOS Golden Gateβ€Œ, you'll see a warning when using any app that relies on Rosetta, so you're aware that the app won't continue to work in the future without a developer update. You can also see which apps are affected by going to Settings > General > About > Intel-Based Apps and then clicking on Details.

Google Photos Wardrobe Feature Comes to iOS

24 September 2026 om 22:33
Google today said its digital wardrobe option is available in the Google Photos iOS app in the U.S., India, and Brazil.

Google first announced the feature back in April, but it was limited to Android users until now. The wardrobe option uses AI to pull images of clothing from the Google β€ŒPhotosβ€Œ library, organizing them into a digital closet.

Users can put items together to create outfits and virtually try them on.

The app shows clothing items in a new Wardrobe section in the Collections tab. Clothing can also be viewed in specific categories like tops or bottoms. Items of clothing can be mixed and matched, and the results can be shared with friends or saved to a moodboard.

Google β€ŒPhotosβ€Œ is also getting 15 new templates for Remix, a feature that uses AI to transform images.

watchOS 27.2 Code Hints at iPhone-Style Screenshot Previews

24 September 2026 om 19:36
watchOS 27.2 could introduce a feature that lets Apple Watch screenshots be previewed with options to share or delete, similar to how screenshots work on the iPhone.

Signs of the feature were found in watchOS 27.2 by code explorer pdfu. The option is hidden behind a feature flag that's not enabled, but it could be introduced in a later watchOS 27.2 beta.

A new screenshot experience is coming to Apple Watch, inspired by iPhone.

Hidden behind a feature flag in watchOS 27.2, it lets you preview, share, or delete a screenshot right after taking it. pic.twitter.com/MT5wmDjRnq

β€” pdfu (@itspdfu) September 24, 2026

Right now, taking a screenshot on the Apple Watch sends it directly to the iPhone Photos app with no confirmation screen. It's easy to accidentally take a screenshot since it only requires pressing the Digital Crown and side button at the same time.

On the iPhone, taking a screenshot shows either a full-screen preview or a thumbnail preview depending on your settings, but both options let you save, share, or delete the screenshot with a couple taps.

Screenshots on Apple Watch are disabled by default but can be turned on through the Settings app on the watch or the Apple Watch app on iPhone. An option to save or delete screenshots would add more control than a simple on or off toggle.

24 September 2026 om 19:14

Apple Shares New Video Promoting iOS 27 Parental Controls

24 September 2026 om 18:58
Apple today shared a video promoting the new parental control features it added in iOS 27.

Apple says Child Accounts are easier to set up in β€ŒiOS 27β€Œ and more intuitive to use. Improved controls allow parents to choose the types of apps children have access to, while Ask to Buy lets kids request new apps and games.

Ask to Browse gives parents a way to block or allow the websites children visit in Safari, plus parents can decide who kids can call and message. Communication Safety in Messages and FaceTime detects and blocks both violence and nudity in images and videos.

Time Allowances and Schedules let parents customize what children can access by the day, hour, and activity, with options to limit apps during school hours. There are one-tap controls to pause access entirely during family events like dinnertime or allow unlimited screen time.

Apple's updated parental controls come as the company deals with regulatory pressure over child safety in countries like the UK, U.S., and Australia. The UK has called for device-level controls that keep kids from viewing and sharing inappropriate images, while the U.S. Kids Internet and Digital Safety Act is now in the Senate. Australia has already prohibited children under 16 from creating accounts on certain social media apps.

Apple's new child safety features became available on September 14 with the launch of β€ŒiOS 27β€Œ, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate. Every device in a Family Sharing group needs to be running the latest software for the Screen Time update to work.

Apple Watch Ultra 2 vs. Ultra 4 Buyer's Guide: Should You Upgrade?

24 September 2026 om 17:55
The Apple Watch Ultra 4 arrives three years after the Ultra 2. Across those two generations, Apple added satellite connectivity, a larger display, new health sensors, and longer battery life. Are those changes enough to justify replacing an Ultra 2 or paying more for the newest model?

Both watches retain a 49mm titanium case, an Action button, a siren, a 3,000-nit display, dual-frequency GPS, and support for recreational diving to 40 meters. The Apple Watch Ultra 4 starts at $799 in the U.S. Apple has discontinued the Ultra 2, although its refurbished store currently lists it from $589. Here are the key differences between the two models:

Is It Worth Upgrading From Ultra 2 to Ultra 4?

Most Apple Watch Ultra 2 owners should keep their watch if its battery still covers their usual days and workouts. It supports watchOS 27 and β€ŒSiriβ€Œ AI, and continues to get new features through software updates.

The new Health Sensing System is the strongest reason to upgrade an Ultra 4. It measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and collects HRV data more frequently, enabling Recovery HRV, daytime Vitals, and the Readiness app. If you will use those insights to adjust your training or better understand changes in your daily condition, the β€ŒApple Watch Ultra 4β€Œ offers a substantially improved health-tracking experience.

The S11 chip strengthens the case to upgrade. Alongside twice the memory, it enables more accurate all-day step counts, a Steps complication, and Audio Intelligence. Sound Recognition can alert you to important surrounding sounds on your wrist, while music recognition can identify songs automatically.

Satellite connectivity and longer battery life add further reasons to switch, especially if you spend time beyond cellular coverage or record long workouts. Apple's ratings increase from 36 to 50 hours of normal use and from 12 to 18 hours of standard outdoor workout tracking. The slightly larger display and faster charging are welcome improvements, but the new sensing and chip-enabled features make the bigger difference.

Should You Buy an Ultra 2 or Ultra 4?

For most people buying an Apple Watch Ultra now, future-proofing is the strongest reason to choose the latest model. Its S11 chip, 4GB of RAM, and Health Sensing System already enable Readiness, more detailed recovery metrics, and Audio Intelligence features. Live Rewind and β€ŒSiriβ€Œ Recap are due later in 2026. If you plan to keep your watch for several years through successive software updates, that newer hardware makes the $799 model easier to justify.

The Apple Watch Ultra 2 remains a credible value option at a substantial discount. At Apple's current $589 refurbished price, it costs $210 less than a new Ultra 4 while retaining the same design and core features. Choose it if those existing capabilities meet your needs and you are comfortable passing up the Ultra 4's hardware-exclusive features.

Qualcomm Announces Renewed Agreement With Apple

24 September 2026 om 15:39
Qualcomm today announced the renewal of its global patent licensing agreement with Apple, effective April 1, 2027. No further details were provided.

This patent agreement is separate from Qualcomm's agreement to supply Apple with cellular modems for smartphone launches through 2026, so we expect Apple's transition to its own custom-designed modems to continue. Among the latest iPhone models, only the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max still has a Qualcomm modem.

The smaller iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Duo are equipped with Apple's C2 modem worldwide, as is the iPhone 18 Pro Max in all countries beyond the U.S., while cellular models of the latest iPad Pro and iPad Air use Apple's previous-generation C1X modem.

Following a legal battle, Apple and Qualcomm reached a settlement that included a six-year patent licensing agreement beginning April 1, 2019. A two-year extension option was exercised, pushing the agreement's expiry date to March 31, 2027. Reuters reported that another two-year extension option was available, so it is possible the agreement now runs through March 31, 2029, but the length of the latest extension was not disclosed.

Full iPhone 4 'Antennagate' Q&A Video Surfaces After 16 Years

24 September 2026 om 14:39
A 47-minute video of the Q&A session from Apple's 2010 iPhone 4 "antennagate" press conference has surfaced on YouTube, showing Steve Jobs, Tim Cook, and Bob Mansfield answering reporters' questions.

The recording was highlighted by Daring Fireball's John Gruber, who attended the event. Apple called the July 16, 2010 press conference amid complaints that holding the iPhone 4 in a particular way could reduce its cellular signal.

Jobs used his prepared presentation to announce free cases for eligible customers and a 30-day return option. Apple later posted video of that presentation, but left out the Q&A, which was documented at the time through written reports and photographs.

Among the exchanges now visible is a question from Gruber at about 18:45 asking whether the three executives used cases on their own iPhone 4s. Jobs, Cook, and Mansfield each hold up an uncased phone. Jobs later gives a lengthy answer about what Apple learned from the controversy, including why the company waited to gather more data before holding the press conference.

Near the end of the recording, Jobs explains Apple's strategy of owning or controlling the core technology behind its products, and why the growing importance of software made that approach valuable for consumer electronics. Gruber says he does not know where the recording came from or why it has surfaced only now.

Meta Did a 'One More Thing' and It's an AI Tamagotchi

24 September 2026 om 10:54
Apple has reportedly shelved plans to launch an AI pendant, while Meta appears to be going all out in the nascent hardware space with a new handheld AI companion. Mark Zuckerberg used his "one more thing" moment at the company's annual Connect event on Wednesday to unveil the Muse Charm, a puck about the size of an Apple Watch featuring a tamagotchi-like, interactive avatar that can be used to chat with the company's Muse AI.

"Muse Charm is a delightful and fun device built for you to talk and interact with your Muse. It brings the power of Muse with a state of the art real-time voice model into a device that fits in your pocket.

"We packed the whole Muse experience, including the whole real-time voice and avatar stack, into something that fits on a keychain and is always available to talk to. You just go ahead and tap here in the fingerprint sensor in the corner, and you can start talking without having to unlock a phone or open an app.

"So if you're not wearing glasses, this is going to be by far the fastest way to talk to your Muse and to show what's going on around you."

We'll have more to share later this year."
That's all we got about the device, which Meta is aiming to have on sale by the holiday season.

Otherwise, Connect was mostly about the company's new Meta VR Glasses. They have a tethered puck for the storage and battery, and the headset is five times lighter than the Meta Quest 3 at 100 grams, with full-color passthrough video support and a 5K display. (For context, M5 Apple Vision Pro weighs 750–800 grams depending on the configuration.)

Meta says the glasses will offer "cinema-grade clarity" with support for Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos spatial audio, and they can deliver up to three hours of continuous high-resolution media playback on a single charge.

The device runs every game available for Quest headsets, and supports Xbox Cloud Gaming. You can also connect it to a PC or Mac and control things with a virtual keyboard and trackpad on a desk. Meta VR Glasses are set to launch in the spring with a $1,300 starting price.

Meanwhile, in an apparent bid to throw off the "pervert glasses" label, Meta also announced an audio-only version of its Ray-Ban smart glasses. The new model supports media playback and calls, and runs for up to 12 hours on a single charge, while the charging case adds up to 48 hours of battery life. Pre-orders are open and the glasses ship on October 13, starting at $349.

Meta hasn't abandoned its camera-equipped Ray-Ban smart glasses, though. Far from it. The company is refreshing its Ray-Ban Meta with a slimmer design and a button that activates Meta AI. The third-generation model is said to have a longer nine hours of battery life (versus eight on the second-gen model) and a new six-microphone array that the company says can cut out over 90 percent of background noise. The 12MP camera supports 3K video capture, with Dolby Atmos Spatial Audio support coming soon. There are multiple styles to choose from, and prices start at $449.

Meta's AI Glasses are also getting a new FDA-cleared hearing enhancement feature later this year. Users can access it as part of a Meta One subscription, or they can pay a one-time cost of $149. A 30-day free trial will also be available.
