OpenAI President on Apple Lawsuit: We Don't Need Your Secrets

29 Juli 2026 om 22:45
OpenAI president Greg Brockman recently did an interview with Joanna Stern, where he commented on the lawsuit OpenAI is facing from Apple and talked about OpenAI's product plans.

Brockman reiterated what OpenAI has already said on the record, stating that the company is "plenty innovative" and uninterested in other companies' trade secrets.
I would say that we have no interest in other companies' trade secrets. We are plenty innovative. We are thinking about things from our own angle. And so that's how we operate and that's what we do.

He also said OpenAI is working on its own long-term product plans.
It's active litigation, so not something that I want to talk about, but all I can say is we're very committed to a long-term roadmap here and that we are focused on our own development and technology. That's what we're interested in.

Apple accused OpenAI of a months-long scheme to steal confidential Apple information from Apple employees interviewing with OpenAI. Apple said OpenAI has created a culture of hardware theft, and that its hardware business is "rotten to the core" because the hardware it's building relies on info stolen from Apple. OpenAI's products are being developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, though Ive wasn't named in the lawsuit.

Brockman declined to say when OpenAI's first hardware devices will come out, but he said people should "expect them soon." Rumors suggest OpenAI's first product will be a mobile smart speaker without a display, and it has been described as a "humanlike AI companion" designed for home use. He further said OpenAI is working on a "family of devices" and is building its own chips. OpenAI wants to offer "value over time" and deliver on a device that's "built for the AI era" and "maximally useful."

He had ChatGPT answer a question about what OpenAI's first AI device would look like.
My take, something ambient and low friction, voice first but not voice only and with a clear privacy signal.

ChatGPT also answered whether the company's first device would need a screen, and it said "nope."

People haven't been thrilled with the recent merging of ChatGPT and Codex, and Brockman acknowledged that the app is "kind of a mess." He described the current app as "incremental progress towards the future," and said the separate Work tab should be gone by the end of the year, with everything molding into ChatGPT.

Brockman's full interview, which goes into more detail on ChatGPT's future, OpenAI's hardware work, and the company's ambitions, can be watched on YouTube.

Apple Begins Selling Refurbished Studio Display XDR

29 Juli 2026 om 22:14
Apple this month began selling certified refurbished Studio Display XDR models in the U.S. for the first time since the display was released in March. Availability extends to Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, and select other countries.

A refurbished Studio Display XDR with a VESA mount adapter and standard glass is priced at $2,459, down from $2,899 for the equivalent new configuration. This amounts to a 15% discount, which is typical for Apple's refurbished products.

A refurbished model with a tilt- and height-adjustable stand and standard glass is priced at $2,799, down from $3,299, which is likewise a 15% discount.

Refurbished models with nano-texture glass are also available at a discount.

Apple says it puts refurbished products through "full functionality testing" and a "thorough cleaning process and inspection," and they are covered by Apple's one-year limited warranty and eligible for extended AppleCare+ coverage. In our view, Apple's own refurbished devices are virtually indistinguishable from brand-new devices.

The refurbished models come in a plain white box with a Thunderbolt 5 Pro cable.

The Studio Display XDR features a 27-inch screen with mini-LED backlighting, 5K resolution, peak brightness of 2,000 nits for HDR content, and up to a 120Hz refresh rate. The display has a 12-megapixel Center Stage camera, six speakers, two Thunderbolt 5 ports with one providing up to 140W pass-through charging, and two USB-C ports.

All the Changes to AppleCare+ This Month

29 Juli 2026 om 21:32
July has been a busy month for AppleCare+ news. We have recapped all the changes to AppleCare+ and the AppleCare One bundle below.

In the U.S., Apple raised the prices on monthly β€Œand annual AppleCareβ€Œ+ subscription plans for Macs and iPads by $0.50/month and $5/year, respectively.

Monthly and annual AppleCare+ subscription plans expanded to a wider range of Apple products in Canada and Japan for the first time this month.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss plans for the iPad and Apple Watch expanded to five countries: Japan, Australia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

AppleCare One is expanding too. Starting on Tuesday, August 4, it will be available in Australia, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom.

Introduced in the U.S. last year, AppleCare One covers up to three devices as part of a single monthly subscription, and the total cost can be lower than multiple AppleCare+ plans. In the United Kingdom, for example, Apple said customers can save up to Β£11.48/month vs. paying for three separate AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss plans.

Galaxy Z Fold8 Review: What Samsung's New Foldable Tells Us About the iPhone Ultra

29 Juli 2026 om 21:13
Samsung announced its latest foldable smartphones last week, and the lineup included the Galaxy Z Fold8, a device that's close to what we're expecting Apple's foldable "iPhone Ultra" to look like when it comes out later this year. MacRumors videographer Dan Barbera has been testing Samsung's new foldable, and the wider 4:3 display bodes well for the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ.

Unlike most of Samsung's Galaxy foldables, the Z Fold8 is wider with a tablet-like look and feel when it's unfolded. It's 5.5 inches when closed and 7.6 inches when open, and those are just about the exact dimensions we've seen rumored for the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ. It's not as tall or narrow as Samsung's other foldable smartphones, and it feels a lot more like using an iPad mini.

A wider unfolded display is better for using two apps side-by-side, and it's also a better screen size for watching videos. The 5.5-inch cover display is perfect for looking at notifications, responding to texts, and answering emails, and then the wider display is ideal for tasks that can use more screen real estate.

Samsung's foldable is our best look yet at what it will be like to use an β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ, and where the shortcomings might be. The book form factor isn't the best for vertical video, and some apps aren't designed for the screen size. Apple is working on automatic resizing for apps to match the iPad-like design, so it may be in a better position than Samsung on the software side.

Samsung's device only has two camera lenses and not the best camera tech the company has, and that's what we're expecting from the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ too. A telephoto lens is unlikely, and a step down in camera quality could be one of the main negatives of choosing the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ over the iPhone 18 Pro this fall. It's also going to be missing Face ID, and going back to Touch ID on a smartphone is a big change.

Apple's design is supposed to be nearly crease-free with a sturdy hinge, and Samsung used new hinge technology for the Z Fold8 too. Samsung says the new mechanism minimizes the crease and makes it harder to feel than with prior models, but it's still clearly visible in some lighting. It'll be interesting to see how Apple's foldable compares.

Samsung didn't come out with this wide-screen foldable smartphone until after rumors suggested it was the design Apple planned to use. Samsung and Apple both have a history of adopting features after the other company comes out with something new, but Samsung seems to follow Apple more often. It looks like Apple picked the shape and details came out through leaks, leading Samsung to make a similar device. Samsung was able to make it to market before Apple because Samsung has been making foldable smartphones for years.

Rumors about a book-style Apple foldable started around March 2018, and Samsung's first foldable came out in 2019. Samsung had seven years to pick a wider design like the one Apple is opting for, but didn't launch the form factor until a couple of months before Apple's foldable is rumored to be coming.

Samsung isn't likely to lure iPhone users away from choosing the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ when it comes out because most people tend to stick with a preferred operating system, but it could stop Galaxy users from swapping over to Apple's tablet-like design. The 4:3 iPad-like display works, and the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ is going to sell well, even at a price around $2,000. Samsung priced the Z Fold8 at $1,900, but rumors suggest Apple could charge up to $2,500.

Apple knows the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ is going to give people sticker shock, and that's probably one of the reasons it just launched Apple Upgrade. Apple Upgrade lets you lease a smartphone for a lower monthly price than you used to be able to get with the iPhone Upgrade Program, and it'll likely help Apple sell the new iPhone.

Dan went into testing expecting the rumored price would keep the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ niche, but after using the Galaxy Z Fold8 and showing other people the design, he's now convinced the β€ŒiPhone Ultraβ€Œ will be a hit.

Joey Hess: my harddrive is probably not full

29 Juli 2026 om 19:25

I enjoyed reading this post by Marginalia "Your harddrive is probably full"

You can construct an entropic argument that there are simply more ways for a harddrive to be full than ways in which it can be empty.

Of course it made me check how full my laptop drive is, and indeed it was more than 75% full, as predicted.

But, I almost never feel that my hard drive is full. I can very easily free up almost any amount of disk space at any time, without any thought. While writing this blog post, I ran a single command and now my harddrive is 50% empty.

The other part of the equation is that a full disk isn’t a problem until it’s so full you can’t put more stuff on it, and at the point it’s so irredeemably cluttered that when you do clean it up, you only have the patience to clean up enough to bide your time, judging the fate of every file on the harddrive is simply too much work.

Why doesn't this apply to me? Because I have put in the up-front thought to organize things, so that I never have to do that anymore.

I have 3 categories of files that I can remove at any time I need more space, without any thought:

  1. Any files that are stored in git-annex. This is one of git-annex's superpowers; you can git-annex drop any file and stop it using disk space, but the file is still there (as a broken symlink) so you don't risk losing or forgetting about it.
  2. Caches.
  3. Files in ~/tmp/, which is reserved for any files I only want to have a passing acquaintance with. If I'm not comfortable with something being deleted at any time, I don't put it there.

Not only do I only have these 3 categories, these are the only 3 categories for everything except OS files and files I have decided I never want to remove (eg dotfiles and other files stored in git repos).

Computer scientists invented caches (and of course cache invalidation is no problem lol) so I only needed to learn about that one. Unix gave me /tmp/ as an example that I long ago used as the basis for the rules for my ~/tmp/. I hope that git-annex might also serve as an example that moving files between drives is not the best way to manage disk space use.

Gemini for Mac Adds System-Wide Voice Dictation and Screen-Aware Commands

29 Juli 2026 om 18:46
Google today updated Gemini for Mac to add a new quick keyboard shortcut that activates voice mode. By long-pressing the Fn key, users can speak naturally to Gemini from any window on their desktop machine.

Gemini supports intelligent dictation, so users can speak to the chatbot using natural language and Gemini will transcribe their words to text. Ums, ahs, and other filler words are removed during the process, and it can catch mid-sentence corrections, dropping formatted text at the cursor.

There's an opt-in screen-aware reasoning mode. If enabled, Gemini can see what's on the Mac's screen to complete tasks. Users can highlight files, images, text, or documents and have Gemini edit, summarize, and compose content in the app they're working in. Gemini is also able to generate and edit images when the screen-aware mode is turned on.

A double press on the Fn key is one of the options for triggering the Mac's built-in dictation feature, so the Gemini replacement will be familiar to those who prefer Gemini.

Gemini's new Mac voice mode is rolling out globally to all Gemini for Mac users in English, with Google planning to add more languages in the future.

iOS 27 Lets You Hide the Messages Button Everyone Hits by Mistake

29 Juli 2026 om 18:10
If you accidentally press the dictation or voice icon after sending a text in Messages, your music may pause while your iPhone starts listening. It's a small annoyance, but a frequent one, since the dictation/audio icon sits so close to the send arrow that stray taps are almost inevitable. In iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, Apple has finally given you a way to get rid of it.

messages
The issue is one that popstar Justin Bieber publicly complained about, claiming that the send button shouldn't have multiple functions so close together. The post went viral, and in iOS 27, Apple has done something about it.

Quite simply, the message text field now has a new setting. You can choose whether it displays the audio waveform icon for recording a voice message, the microphone icon for dictation, or nothing at all. Here's how to find it:

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.

  2. Tap Apps at the bottom of the list.

  3. Tap Messages.

  4. Tap Show in Text Field.

  5. Choose one of the three options: Record Audio, Start Dictation, or None.
    settings
If you keep tapping the text field icon by mistake, you'll want to choose None.

If you occasionally record voice messages, don't worry – you can still use the plus button to the left of the input field to enable Audio. If it's dictation you sometimes use, you'll find the microphone key at the bottom right of the iOS keyboard (if it's not there, go to Settings ➝ General ➝ Keyboard and turn on Enable Dictation.)

iOS 27 is remains in beta, with a public release expected sometime this September.

Apple's New Upgrade Program: Is It Worth It?

29 Juli 2026 om 16:29
With the new Apple Upgrade program in the U.S., you can now lease an iPhone, but is it worth it? The answer is more complicated than a simple yes or no.

We'll use the iPhone 17 Pro with 256GB of storage on a one-year lease as an example. In the U.S., the device costs $1,099 upfront, but through Apple Upgrade you can lease it for $45.99/month for 12 months.

For a 12-month lease, your payments would total $551.88, which is lower than the $1,099 that you would have spent upfront. However, it is not quite that simple, as you have to choose from one of the three following options after your lease ends:

  • Return your iPhone.

  • Return your iPhone and upgrade to a newer iPhone.

  • Buy the iPhone outright by paying an amount equal to the device's retail price minus any lease payments made.

We dive into each of those options below.

Options

Returning the iPhone

If you return the iPhone 17 Pro and simply move on from the Apple Upgrade program, then your total cost to own the device would be $551.88 after 12 months, plus sales tax if applicable. While that is less than paying $1,099 upfront, the catch is that you are no longer in possession of the device after your lease ends and cannot resell it or trade it in.

Resale value is a big factor. If you paid $1,099 upfront for the iPhone 17 Pro but resold it for say $650 through a private sale on eBay or Facebook Marketplace after 12 months, then you only spent $450 to own the device for a year, compared to $551 if you leased it through the Apple Upgrade Program for that long. But if you somehow only managed to get $500 for the device in a private sale, then you spent $600 for the device and could have saved a bit of money by opting for the Apple Upgrade program.

$551.88 is approximately 50% of the iPhone 17 Pro's price, so Apple is essentially betting that the device will retain more than 50% of its value after one year, in order to ensure that the Apple Upgrade program is profitable. Resale prices for used iPhones can vary significantly, but Apple almost certainly expects to come out ahead.

For instance, Apple's trade-in program currently offers $560 for a used iPhone 16 Pro in good condition, and that device was released nearly two years ago. Yet, Apple is effectively "giving you back" only $547.12 on a used iPhone 17 Pro after just one year ($1,099 minus $551.88), so the math unsurprisingly works in Apple's favor.

Keep in mind that the Apple Upgrade program is partly about convenience, as you do not have to deal with reselling your iPhone β€” not everyone likes to deal with eBay or Facebook Marketplace. That alone might sway some customers towards Apple Upgrade, even if they know there is a chance it is not the most financially optimal decision.

Upgrading to a New iPhone

If you return the iPhone and upgrade to a newer one, the process essentially starts over.

For example, if the iPhone 18 Pro with 256GB of storage were to be offered at the same $45.99/month price, you would pay another $551.88 during the following 12 months. That would bring your total cost to $1,103.76 over two years, and you would still need to return the iPhone 18 Pro or make a final payment to keep it.

If you had purchased both the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro upfront for $1,099 each, the total cost would have been $2,198. If you had managed to resell the devices for $650 each, you would have recouped $1300, lowering your final cost to $898, which would have been less than the $1,103.76 cost of leasing the devices after two years.

Of course, the resale values we have provided are purely hypothetical. There is no way of knowing what a used iPhone will be worth with certainty, but Apple has surely put a lot of research into its leasing prices to ensure that it makes a profit.

Buying the iPhone

If you opt to buy the iPhone outright at the end of your 12-month lease, by paying an amount equal to the device's retail price minus the $551.88 in lease payments made, then you simply owe the remaining $547.12 to Apple's financing partner Klarna. This brings your total cost to $1,099, which is the upfront price of the iPhone 17 Pro.

In this case, you ultimately just purchased your iPhone 17 Pro with interest-free financing by spreading out the $1,099 cost over 12 months.

Is It Worth It?

If you simply want to spend the least amount of money on iPhones over time, buying them upfront and reselling them privately is very likely the best option.

However, the Apple Upgrade program can be worth it for customers who value convenience and predictability. If you want a new iPhone every year or two and want to avoid the hassle of selling your existing iPhone through eBay or Facebook Marketplace, then the program is worth considering if the monthly payments fit into your budget.

The option to buy out the iPhone at the end of the lease is more straightforward. Since the final payment is equal to the original retail price minus the payments already made, Apple Upgrade effectively becomes a 12-month, interest-free financing plan. In this case, you would not have spent any more than you would have upfront.

iPhone Driver's Licenses May Soon Expand to Another US State

29 Juli 2026 om 15:15
Driver's licenses and IDs may soon be available in Apple Wallet for iPhone and Apple Watch users living in Oklahoma. MacRumors discovered signs of an Oklahoma ID in Apple's backend.

With input from Apple, a House bill was passed in March 2026 that allows Service Oklahoma to issue mobile or digital versions of state identification cards, driver's licenses or permits – suggesting this is Apple taking preparatory steps for future Wallet integration.

The digital equivalents are not intended to replace physical licenses or state IDs, meaning Oklahomans will be required to keep the latter, while using the mobile version as a "companion option."

Other states planning to add support for driver's licenses in Apple Wallet include Connecticut, Kentucky, Mississippi, Utah, and Virginia. MacRumors already spotted signs of Utah and Virginia in Apple's backend.

Multiple states have already implemented support, as has Puerto Rico:

  • Arkansas

  • Arizona

  • California

  • Colorado

  • Georgia

  • Hawaii

  • Illinois

  • Iowa

  • Maryland

  • Montana

  • New Mexico

  • North Dakota

  • Ohio

  • West Virginia

Digital IDs and licenses are accepted at select TSA checkpoints across the United States. They can also be used at some business venues and in select apps that require ID verification for services or purchases.

In states that do not support licenses in the Wallet app, iPhone users can add their U.S. passport to the Apple Wallet app with the iOS 26 Digital ID feature.

WhatsApp Rolls Out Web Calling, Call Transfer Across Devices, and More

29 Juli 2026 om 12:05
WhatsApp has announced a handful of enhancements for group calling over the encrypted platform, including seamless call transfers across devices and a new web calling feature.

It's now possible to make and receive audio and video calls, including both one-on-one and group calls, directly from WhatsApp Web. The new browser-based service provides access to common features available on other devices, like screen sharing, reactions, and a dedicated Calls tab with a user's full call history.

WhatsApp says the end-to-end encrypted web service will make it easier to jump on a call without leaving your browser, and it should be especially welcomed by anyone who uses a work laptop that doesn't allow app downloads.

The latest rollout also brings Call Transfer, allowing users to move an active group call from one device to another without hanging up.

Then there's the new Waiting Room, which appears when creating a WhatsApp call link with "Require approval to join" enabled. Participants now enter the waiting room first until the host is ready to let them in.

Two last additions round out this update: QuickHD allows users to enjoy high-definition video immediately in the very first few seconds of the call, while Noise Suppression removes background noise so that voices come through more clearly, even in loud or busy environments.

WhatsApp says the slate of new features are rolling out gradually and will be "available to everyone soon."

Russ Allbery: Review: Midlife in Gretna Green

29 Juli 2026 om 04:19

Review: Midlife in Gretna Green, by Linzi Day

Series: Midlife Recorder #1
Publisher: Linzi Day
Copyright: July 2022
ISBN: 9798837010774
Format: Kindle
Pages: 464

Midlife in Gretna Green is a self-published fantasy novel. It's urban fantasy in the sense that it's set in our world but with magic that most people don't know about, but the primary setting is a parish in rural Scotland and therefore the genre is not urban in that sense. It was Linzi Day's published first novel.

As the story opens, Niki McKnight is a widow in Manchester, England with a job in the Register Office she likes, a boss she hates, and a Bichon Frise dog she adores. In the year since her husband Nick died, she's put her life on hold and made as few decisions as possible, despite some concerned pushing from her best friend Aysha. The death of her grandmother is not entirely unexpected, but her inheritance is about to upend her life.

Niki assumes that her grandmother has a modest cottage and a small estate, and therefore being the named heir will mostly involve cleaning up the details of a modest life. She is caught by surprise by a requirement in the will that she live in Gretna Green for a year and a day in order to inherit. Her initial reaction is to treat this as an absurd impossibility given her life and job in Manchester, but she slowly realizes something strange is going on. Her grandmother's lawyer is lying to her, he refuses to tell her the value of the estate and seems to think it's more valuable than she expected, and her grandmother's tiny cottage does not seem to be following the seasons of the rest of the world. There is something magical at work.

I will not spoil the rest of the reveal. I will say that this is a magical house book because, if you are anything like me, that is why you will want to read this series. There are not enough magical house books, and this is one of the better kind that allow the house to be a full speaking character.

Midlife in Gretna Green is an unapologetic fantasy of personal agency. Niki starts the novel with a miserable manager, a messy pile of unread mail she doesn't want to deal with, and a lot of personal emotional baggage. She gets handed a position that requires and rewards standing up for herself and being decisive. It comes with a pile of unresolved but not horribly complex problems that were waiting for someone who would listen, make sensible decisions, and treat other people with respect. Oh, and there are a few assholes in the way, but they seriously underestimate the power she has to put a stop to their bullshit.

This is the sort of book that traditional publishers tended not to buy (although Day apparently did get an offer for this one and turned it down), and I'm not sure why. Editors thought protagonists should have to work harder for their payoff? Some lingering Calvinist dourness in English language publishing mistrusted triumphant books? Obvious wish fulfillment was considered embarrassing or low-class and thus didn't warrant publication? This didn't apply to the endless bildungsromans about magically talented boys, so some level of sexism was probably in play. Maybe this is finally changing? It reminds me of the bias against romance novels and their guaranteed happily ever after, and in the case of romance there was too much money for publishers to leave it on the table.

In any case, the growth of self-publishing has created an alternative market that let these books reach an audience and I for one am here for it. A lot of wish-fulfillment books, and a lot of self-published books, are not very good, but the ones that have a spark of originality and character can be a delight worth tolerating the somewhat rocky editing and pacing problems that a full editorial staff might have cleaned up.

I loved reading books about kickass women who took no crap and fixed their lives up exactly how they wanted them to be. But how did they get to be that way? They always started out awesome in the books. Seriously, did they kick ass at sixteen? Or did their superpower kickassery not kick in until they were thirty? Forty? If so, then I was screwed. Would I need to wait till I was fifty or until a genie arrived offering wishes? I already felt as if I’d spent my whole life waiting for something wild and wonderful to happen.

Niki is a Specific Type to a somewhat hilarious degree, and I'm not sure if Day is playing into that intentionally or if she's projecting herself into the book. The amount of self-insertion is not zero: Day also lives in Gretna Green, owns a Bichon Frise, and worked as an assistant registrar and civil celebrant. Niki also drinks wine regularly, has a psychic gift, occasionally reads tarot cards, is an accommodating pushover at work who struggles to say no to her abusive boss, has impostor syndrome problems, and swears by a fictional self-help book about grief that provides the quotes at the starts of chapters. There is a cat, because of course there's a cat.

(The fictional self-help book is a spot-on parody played entirely straight in the story. I think Day is having some fun with the reader? I can't tell!)

This is what I mean by unapologetic. It's easy to read Niki as a stereotype, but she's a stereotype a lot of real people can identify with and there's something highly satisfying in watching her find her footing. I like wish fulfillment books; it's fun to see someone's wishes come true! Particularly in the year of 2026, there's something immensely satisfying in seeing an ordinary, insecure person get a massive amount of power and use it to make the world better. I don't need everything to be hard, fraught, and laden with costs in fiction, although I wouldn't want every book I read to be like this.

Also, the world building is great. It's not polished; there's a bit of a grab bag feeling to it, I'm dubious the magic system has any underlying rigorous rule set, and Niki's powers, once she has access to them, are more of a semi-sentient genie than a skill she has to learn with hard practice. But the magic is fun. The sentient house is one of the best characters, particularly after Niki realizes how underused it has been, and I am a sucker for any good sentient house book. The cat is a far more interesting character than I first thought she would be. And Niki's new magical job is more complicated and less typical than the normal Celtic-inspired fantasy that I thought it was going to be at first.

My primary warning about this book is that Niki starts out beaten down and grieving her dead husband, and it took me about five pages to decide that her dead husband was a complete piece of shit who was not worth any of the grief Niki puts into him. She also doesn't stand up for herself for the first hundred pages or so, which made me want to yell at the book a few times. Both of these problems go away farther into the book, and Niki does eventually figure out that Nick was abusive trash, but I was relieved when the "make endless excuses for worthless men" portion of the story was finally over. You have to stick with it until Niki gets brave enough to try being the protagonist; once that happens, it becomes great fun.

It is fairly obvious that Midlife in Gretna Green was self-published, and I wish it had gotten the editing that it deserved. My copy had a couple of obvious formatting errors, the plot veers about more than was strictly necessary, and I think a careful editing pass could have tightened the writing by about fifty pages or so without losing any important detail. If that sort of thing bothers you, make sure you're in self-published fiction mode before starting this one. But it also has that irrepressible, bubbling-with-ideas feeling of a book where nothing has suppressed the author's enthusiasm. It's a very grabby book; once Niki starts embracing her new life, I could barely put it down.

If you're in the mood for a good fantasy wish-fulfillment story that has no romance and a whole lot of "why are things run this way, no, we're changing that," highly recommended. I had so much fun with this book, and the series is currently making the rounds of my whole family. Don't read this when you're looking for something challenging and literary and deep; save it for when you desperately want to watch someone just fix something for once, damn it.

Followed by Painting the Blues in Gretna Green, which I have already read, breaking my usual rule of writing reviews before reading the next book in a series.

OpenAI's First Devices: Speaker, Smartphone, and More

29 Juli 2026 om 03:00
OpenAI's hardware roadmap has sharpened considerably in recent months, with its first device now identified, a smartphone said to be arriving as soon as next year, and a wider lineup taking shape behind them.

AI Smart Speaker

OpenAI's first product is a portable, screenless smart speaker developed with former Apple design chief Jony Ive, designed to act as a personal companion in the home rather than a conventional voice assistant.

Design

The device is said to have a rechargeable battery so it can be carried between rooms, a camera for understanding its surroundings, and mechanical elements that move on their own to give a sense that it is alive. Ive and CEO Sam Altman had previously said they did not want to build a device with a screen, with Altman describing a prototype to employees as "the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen."

Features

Powered by ChatGPT and using GPT-Live for conversation, the speaker will reportedly control smart home accessories, answer questions, play media, and respond to messages, becoming more personalized and proactive over time. It is also said to have a personality of its own. OpenAI reportedly does not regard the HomePod or HomePod mini as comparable products.

Price and Release Date

The speaker is expected in early 2027 at a price between $200 and $300, having slipped beyond an initial release target of this year.

AI Smartphone

Supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo first described the device in April as an "AI agent phone" built around a continuous, context-aware interface rather than individual apps, arguing that the smartphone is the only device capturing a user's full real-time state, including location, activity, communication, and context. He believes controlling both the operating system and the hardware is the only way OpenAI can deliver a comprehensive agent service.

Specifications

The phone is said to use a customized version of MediaTek's Dimensity 9600 processor built on TSMC's N2P node, also used on Apple's upcoming "A20" chips, with MediaTek now looking likely to be the sole chip supplier after Kuo initially named Qualcomm as a possible partner. Luxshare Precision Industry is believed to be the exclusive manufacturing partner, and Sunny Optical has secured component orders for two OpenAI devices, likely for camera modules.

Its headline known specification is an image signal processor with an enhanced HDR pipeline intended to improve real-world sensing through the camera, alongside two AI processors for handling vision and language tasks simultaneously.

Timeline

Mass production was originally targeted for 2028, but Kuo revised that to the first half of 2027, reflecting OpenAI's planned IPO and intensifying competition in the category. He projects combined 2027 and 2028 shipments could reach around 30 million units if development stays on track.

Other Devices

Smart glasses, a smart lamp, and potentially earbuds are also reportedly in development, though those sit further out on the roadmap and some could be cancelled. The lineup stems from OpenAI's $6.5 billion acquisition of Ive's startup io Products, alongside an aggressive recruitment campaign that has brought more than 400 former Apple employees to the company, among them designers Evans Hankey, Tang Tan, and Scott Cannon, and Vision Products Group leader Paul Meade. Apple responded with retention bonuses of up to $400,000 in restricted stock units for its iPhone Product Design team.

Apple's Lawsuit

That hiring is now the subject of litigation. Apple sued OpenAI on July 10 over the alleged theft of trade secrets, and Bloomberg's Mark Gurman argues the case is already slowing the hardware effort by deterring Apple engineers from interviewing and making suppliers wary. OpenAI says it has "no interest in other companies' trade secrets."

What Does It Mean for Apple?

Apple is separately rumored to be developing smart glasses, AirPods with cameras, an AI pendant, and a smart home hub with enhanced Siri capabilities, putting the two companies on a collision course across several categories.

iOS 27: All the New Phone and FaceTime Features

29 Juli 2026 om 00:36
The Phone and FaceTime apps didn't get as many new features as some of Apple's other apps, but there are a handful of capabilities that add utility and convenience.

Phone App

The Phone app has one major update, and that's Call Context. When you call a company, the Phone app can surface relevant information from the Mail app.

If you call an airline, it might show your confirmation code for an upcoming flight, or your reservation code if you're calling a hotel. It doesn't listen to what you're saying, but instead looks at the number you're calling and links it to details in the Mail app.

Call Context is an Apple Intelligence feature that runs entirely on-device, and it requires an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. It also works when you make a phone call from your iPad or Mac.

FaceTime

β€ŒFaceTimeβ€Œ has a couple of new features, but the biggest is Dual Capture. On the iPhone 17 models and the iPhone Air, you can use the front and back cameras at the same time while on a β€ŒFaceTimeβ€Œ call.

The person you're calling is able to see your face and what's shown through the back camera.

You can turn on Dual Capture on a supported iPhone by tapping on the camera flip button. If you only want to show the back camera feed, you can tap to turn off the front camera view.

While streaming video with Dual Capture is limited to the β€ŒiPhone 17β€Œ, iPhone 17 Pro, β€ŒiPhone 17 Proβ€Œ Max, β€ŒiPhone Airβ€Œ, and newer, anyone running iOS 27 can see a dual video stream on a β€ŒFaceTimeβ€Œ call because there are no hardware requirements for the receiving device.

There are a few other features worth knowing about:

  • Connection Quality - When you have a bad connection, β€ŒFaceTimeβ€Œ calls will now have better quality than before.

  • Wi-Fi/Cellular - In β€ŒiOS 27β€Œ, iPhones are better at transitioning from a Wi-Fi to a cellular connection and vice versa, so you'll lose connection less often when moving between networks.

  • Live Captions - Live Captions are now available in Traditional Chinese.

  • Communication Safety - Communication Safety blocks gore and violence in β€ŒFaceTimeβ€Œ and Messages instead of just nudity.

iOS 27 Launch

β€ŒiOS 27β€Œ is being beta tested right now, and can be downloaded by developers and public beta testers. It will launch this fall alongside new iPhone models.

Apple Upgrade: 20 Things to Know Before Leasing an iPhone, iPad, or Mac

28 Juli 2026 om 22:19
Apple retired the iPhone Upgrade Program in favor of a new Apple Upgrade leasing option made available in partnership with Klarna. Apple Upgrade gives customers an option to get iPhones, iPads, Macs, and Apple Watches at cheaper prices than before, but there are some things worth knowing about it.

We've gathered up some smaller tidbits that you should be aware of before deciding to opt in.

  • U.S. Only - Apple Upgrade is only available in the United States, and there's no word on whether it will expand to other countries.

  • Unlocked iPhones - iPhones leased with Apple Upgrade are unlocked, but you are required to choose a carrier at checkout. Carrier options include AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile. Since the iPhone is unlocked, you can switch carriers after purchase or add a second eSIM.

  • Postpaid Plans Only - You have to have a postpaid plan through a supported carrier to use Apple Upgrade. Prepaid plans aren't an option when leasing.

  • Ownership - You don't own the iPhone you're leasing at the end of the lease term unless you pay off the final amount. Your final payment is the device's cost when it was leased minus what was paid during the lease. If you don't want to purchase the iPhone, or if you want to upgrade, you need to return the leased iPhone.

  • No Lockout - Code in the iOS 27 beta suggested Apple could restrict apps and services if there are missed payments on a leased device, but it's not for Apple Upgrade. Missing a payment won't change how your iPhone works.

  • Missed Payments - If you miss a payment, it's rolled into your next month's payment. There are no late fees.

  • Three Strikes - If you miss three payments in a row, Klarna automatically terminates your lease and the full balance of the iPhone is due immediately. Klarna will subtract the value of the iPhone from the amount owed when you return it, cutting down on the payoff amount. If you don't return the iPhone or don't pay the balance, Klarna will send the account to collections.

  • No Fees - There are no fees for missing a payment, but you are subject to the lease termination rules. Missing a payment can also impact your credit score.

  • AppleCare+ - Unlike the iPhone Upgrade Program, AppleCare+ is not included with the Apple Upgrade leasing fee, and it needs to be purchased separately. β€ŒAppleCareβ€Œ+ for the iPhone is $9.99 to $13.99 per month, or you can get β€ŒAppleCareβ€Œ One for $19.99 per month. β€ŒAppleCareβ€Œ One covers three devices.

  • Damage - Klarna will charge for any damage to an iPhone, and you'll need to pay for a repair when returning a device. If you have β€ŒAppleCareβ€Œ+, you'll only pay the β€ŒAppleCareβ€Œ+ service fee.

  • iPhone Upgrade Program - The iPhone Upgrade Program is discontinued. Current members don't have to swap to Apple Upgrade or another purchase option right now, but will need to do so at their next upgrade.

  • Apple Card Monthly Installments - Apple Card holders can still choose to finance an iPhone with zero interest using the β€ŒApple Cardβ€Œ Monthly Installments option. An iPhone purchased with β€ŒApple Cardβ€Œ is owned outright.

  • Ineligible Products - Some Apple devices can't be purchased with Apple Upgrade, including the iPhone 16, β€ŒiPhone 16β€Œ Plus, Apple Watch SE, MacBook Neo, Mac mini, A16 iPad, and Studio Display.

  • No EDU - You can't use Apple Upgrade for discounted education prices.

  • No Refurbished Devices - You can't buy a refurbished Apple device with Apple Upgrade.

  • Ending a Lease Early - You can end a lease early, but you need to pay off the remaining amount on the lease and then return the device.

  • Buying Out a Lease - You can pay off a lease early with no penalty.

  • Soft Credit Check - There's no hard credit check when initiating a lease, so getting approval for a lease won't affect your credit.

  • Trade-Ins - When you initiate a lease, you can trade in an old iPhone. Trade-in value is split across your monthly payments instead of applied up front. You can't do a trade-in when sending a device back to upgrade to a new one.

  • Payment Restrictions - Klarna doesn't accept some credit cards, like AMEX, Chase, and Capital One. Other credit cards like the β€ŒApple Cardβ€Œ can be used for Apple Upgrade payments to Klarna.

Apple Shares 'Ted Lasso' Season 4 Trailer

28 Juli 2026 om 19:20
Apple today shared the full-length trailer for season four of its hit series Ted Lasso, ahead of the season premiere on Wednesday, August 5. Following the premiere, one new episode will be released every Wednesday through October 7.

Ted Lasso is one of the most popular shows ever released on the Apple TV streaming service. The eponymous character Ted Lasso, played by Jason Sudeikis, starts off as a small-time football coach from Kansas who is hired to coach a professional soccer team in England, despite having no experience coaching soccer.

In the fourth season, Apple said Lasso returns to England to take on his biggest challenge yet: coaching a second division women's soccer team.

"Throughout the course of the season, Ted and the team learn to leap before they look, taking chances they never thought they would," said Apple.

Fan favorites such as Hannah Waddingham, Juno Temple, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, and Jeremy Swift are all set to return in the fourth season.

The third season of Ted Lasso was released in 2023, so there has been a long wait for a fourth season. The series has won several major awards since it debuted in 2020, with its overall positive tone making it a popular comfort show.

All-New Apple Home Hub Reportedly Launching as Soon as October

28 Juli 2026 om 19:06
Apple plans to release an all-new smart home hub at some point between October and early next year, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman.

Apple Home Hub (Concept)

Siri AI is expected to be a core feature of the hub, which is designed to be placed in rooms throughout your house, such as a kitchen, living room, or bedroom. The report said the device will be available in tabletop and wall-mounted versions, with Apple apparently believing that many customers will buy more than one.

The hub will essentially combine a HomePod-like speaker with a 7-inch display. The report said the device runs an entirely new operating system based on the Apple TV's tvOS platform, with the interface described as tvOS blended with watchOS and iOS. There will be a grid of icons, widgets, and apps, along with customizable clock faces.

With built-in facial recognition, the hub can identify who is looking at the display and show personalized information, the report said. As a user approaches the hub, or moves away from it, the size of the interface elements will change.

Other features mentioned include FaceTime video calls, home security monitoring, HomeKit accessory management, photo galleries, a calendar, music playback, and an intercom system for households with multiple Apple home devices.

Apple also continues to work on an advanced in-home security camera that would compete with Amazon's Ring products, according to the report.

Looking back on Microsoft’s FY26: From AI experimentation to Frontier Transformation

28 Juli 2026 om 18:00

Throughout this past fiscal year, customers across every industry and segment moved from AI experimentation to deploying AI for real-world business outcomes. They unlocked innovation and created new opportunities for growth. We saw the emergence of Frontier Firms as they moved beyond efficiency gains to focus on human ambition and embed AI at the core of how they operate. Successful customers are building an intelligence platform so their unique IQ β€” their knowledge, data, workflows, applications and expertise β€” can continuously compound, ensuring the value of AI accrues to the customer, not the model. They have a trust platform that is pervasive, with the ability to manage, govern, secure and measure AI across every business process.

Everything we are doing at Microsoft is empowering Frontier Transformation: Copilot enables AI in the flow of human ambition, Microsoft IQ amplifies and protects an organization’s IQ and Agent 365 is the trust platform that enables observability at every layer of the stack.

Businesses are not static, and neither are the AI systems that support them. As organizations evolve, AI systems must continuously learn and improve. Agentic workflows need to be built, observed and tuned against the outcomes organizations seek and the ROI they demand. Microsoft’s open, model-diverse and heterogenous platform powers that improvement loop. We also recently announced Microsoft Frontier Company, bringing our AI engineering approach to customers around the world to help them build these AI systems to accelerate measurable business outcomes.

Throughout the past year, we saw customers put these capabilities to work in powerful ways β€” embedding AI into core business processes, building agentic systems, strengthening security, accelerating innovation and creating new sources of value. The stories below highlight organizations leading Frontier Transformation, demonstrating how intelligence, trust and human ambition come together across industries.

To advance its journey to become a global AI-powered company, Atos Group deployed Microsoft 365 Copilot to 56,000 employees across 54 countries β€” from consultants to engineers to frontline workers β€” and was one of the first organizations globally to adopt Microsoft 365 E7: The Frontier Suite. Using Microsoft Foundry, Microsoft Copilot Studio and Agent 365, Atos is building, operating and governing a growing ecosystem of 19,000 AI agents through a unified operating model that brings together productivity, security, compliance and agent governance. As Atos embeds secure agentic AI across its workforce, the company is creating a repeatable model to continuously improve thousands of agents at scale while applying the same playbook to help customers accelerate adoption across highly regulated industries.

Facing state-sponsored threats and complex global operations, ASM is strengthening cyber resilience with Microsoft Security Copilot, helping protect the intellectual property behind advanced semiconductor manufacturing. By bringing threat investigations into a unified AI-powered experience, ASM enables analysts to investigate incidents faster, apply consistent decision-making across global operations and accelerate the development of cybersecurity talent. The company reduced incident triage time by 68%, cut laptop compromise investigations from 25 minutes to eight and now saves 337 hours each week on investigations while redeploying 20% of its security operations staff to governance, risk and compliance initiatives.

Banco Popular Dominicano, the largest private-sector bank in the Dominican Republic, transformed operational risk management from periodic, sample-based reviews into continuous, AI-powered supervision. Using AURA β€” an ecosystem of specialized agents built on Microsoft Copilot Studio and Microsoft Power Platform β€” the bank monitors 100% of its operational risk universe in real time, up from roughly 40% coverage, and can automatically analyze changes, validate controls and surface issues as they occur. The shift has delivered seven times greater analytical capacity, reduced manual operating effort by 70%, achieved 98% methodological accuracy and enabled continuous processing of approximately 80,000 documents per week and more than 300 cases per day. Just as importantly, risk teams have moved from reacting to problems after the fact to anticipating and preventing deviations before they occur. These results demonstrate the power of AI democratization. By enabling business teams to build intelligent solutions themselves through low-code tools, Banco Popular transformed operational risk management while fostering a culture of innovation led by domain experts.

To help reduce the manual burden for employees while meeting the pharmaceutical industry’s strict data security requirements, Cactus Life Sciences modernized scientific workflows with Microsoft 365 Copilot and agents. The company has deployed more than 30 custom automation agents to streamline document review and structure data extraction and information retrieval across scientific writing and project management teams. Supported by a centralized knowledge repository and the Copilot Champions community, the company reports efficiency improvements of approximately 35% to 50% in structured data extraction. By automating labor-intensive tasks and maintaining human review and quality controls, the company is enabling scientific writers to focus on deeper analysis, synthesis and delivering exceptional science to clients.

Chow Tai Fook is redefining luxury retail with Microsoft 365 E5, Microsoft Purview, Microsoft Azure OpenAI Service, Microsoft Fabric and Microsoft Foundry. The company has deployed over 400 customized AI agents supporting more than 24,000 employees, with millions of AI interactions each month and core business-process efficiency gains exceeding 70%. Through its AI Fook super-agent ecosystem, frontline associates can instantly access product expertise, inventory insights and personalized recommendations, helping drive sales conversion improvements of up to 57% while delivering hyper-personalized omnichannel experiences at scale. With hundreds of AI agents operating across the business, Chow Tai Fook is creating a foundation where customer, product and operational intelligence can be applied across every interaction, helping personalize experiences and improve decision-making across its global retail network.

To accelerate AI adoption, EY moved AI from experimentation into enterprise-wide transformation. After deploying Microsoft 365 Copilot to 150,000 employees and realizing a 15% productivity gain, the firm is expanding the Microsoft 365 Frontier Suite across its global workforce of more than 400,000 people, embedding agentic AI capabilities across the enterprise. As Client Zero, EY is applying Microsoft technologies across its own operations, including Microsoft Power Platform, Microsoft Copilot Studio, Microsoft Azure, Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft Fabric. The results include 95% faster lead times, a more than 37% reduction in finance operating costs and up to a 90% reduction in manual workloads across key business processes.

To reimagine the grocery shopping experience, Grandiose Supermarkets created an AI-powered shopping companion β€” GrandChef β€” built on Microsoft Foundry and Azure OpenAI Service. By connecting meal inspiration, recipe discovery and product purchasing into a single experience grounded in live product and inventory data, GrandChef helps shoppers move from intent to purchase faster and with greater confidence. This has led to a 31% increase in conversion, a 20% lift in average basket value and shopping journeys that are 40% faster. Together, these gains are helping Grandiose Supermarkets create more personalized customer experiences while driving measurable business growth. By connecting customer intent, product data and purchasing decisions in a single experience, Grandiose is creating a feedback loop that helps continuously improve recommendations and shopping experiences.

To support audits across its global organization, Grupo Bimbo built two agents with Microsoft Copilot Studio and deployed them through Microsoft 365 Copilot and Microsoft Teams: the result was Audit Assist, an idea generated from a Microsoft-supported internal hackathon and Comatrix. By connecting auditors directly to approved guidance, procedures and templates in SharePoint, the company is helping teams work more efficiently across 39 countries while improving consistency and audit quality. The solution/AI agents reduced planning-phase audit time by 20% and accelerated risk and control matrix creation from days to seconds, enabling auditors to spend less time searching for information and more time on analysis and decision-making. By making approved audit knowledge instantly accessible across its global audit organization, Grupo Bimbo is creating a foundation where expertise can scale with the business β€” improving consistency, reducing rework and enabling auditors to focus on higher-value analysis and decision-making.

To create a unified foundation for data, automation and AI across its operations in 47 countries, Navien built a connected, intelligent operating model with Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Foundry and Microsoft Copilot Studio. By connecting fragmented data and processes across procurement, manufacturing, quality and customer service, the company is enabling more consistent, data-driven decision-making across its operations. Navien saved 28,000 hours annually through AI agents and automation, with 32% of employees using self-service analytics to make decisions without IT support. Through its migration to Azure, it also expects more than 1.4 million in total cost-of-ownership savings over five years. By connecting data, insights and workflows across the business, Navien is enabling faster, more consistent decision-making at scale across its global operations.

NHS England is accelerating AI adoption across the healthcare system with the largest implementation of its kind in the healthcare sector. Following a trial involving 30,000 workers across 90 NHS organizations β€” where users saved an average of 43 minutes of administrative time per day β€” NHS England is rolling out Microsoft 365 Copilot to over 500,000 clinicians and support staff. Organizations can use Microsoft Copilot Studio to build and deploy AI agents that streamline clinical, operational and administrative workflows. Through Agent 365, NHS England can govern and scale those agents across the healthcare system while enabling individual trusts to build solutions for local needs β€” creating a secure framework where agentic workflows can be deployed, managed and expanded consistently to improve service delivery, reduce costs and create more time for patient care.

Novo Nordisk is using AI to help researchers make faster, more quantitative decisions in pharmaceutical R&D. Working with Microsoft’s AI Acceleration Studio within the Forward Deployed Engineering team, the company built a governed reasoning agent on Microsoft Azure with its proprietary dataset, including more than 200,000 patient-years of harmonized clinical trial data, while maintaining rigor, oversight and compliance. The system has expanded the team’s capacity to evaluate potential opportunities from 5 to 10 strong ideas per quarter to more than 50, and the company expects it to reduce time to insight for exploratory analyses from weeks to minutes. By grounding AI in its datasets and governed workflows, Novo Nordisk is helping scientists turn decades of institutional expertise into a reusable intelligence layer that can help accelerate discovery across the organization.

As AI becomes part of investment decision-making, SimCorp is helping financial institutions bring AI into investment workflows without compromising governance, auditability or control. By unifying SimCorp One on Microsoft Azure and leveraging Microsoft Foundry, the company is helping portfolio managers, risk analysts and operations teams access insights faster, automate manual processes and spend more time on higher-value decisions. By standardizing how AI is deployed and governed across global investment operations, SimCorp is creating a foundation for trusted AI at scale, helping organizations embed AI into investment workflows while maintaining the controls required in highly regulated markets. One study found SimCorp One customers realized 134% ROI over three years, improved operational efficiency by 45 percent, saved 10 hours per person per week and accelerated time to market by 50 to 60 days.

Stellantis is accelerating AI-led strategy and digital transformation across its global business, co-developing more than 100 AI initiatives across sales, customer care, product development and operations. By applying AI-powered insights across the business, the automaker is streamlining product development and validation, advancing predictive maintenance and bringing new digital features and services to market faster for customers. Stellantis is also deploying an AI-driven global cyberdefense center to help protect vehicles, customers and operations worldwide while modernizing its infrastructure on Microsoft Azure with a targeted 60% reduction in its datacenter footprint by 2029, powering a more scalable and interconnected digital ecosystem for future digital and connected services and resilient operations.

Facing a growing volume of cyberthreats across a complex healthcare environment, St. Luke’s University Health Network is using Microsoft Security Copilot to help protect the systems clinicians and patients depend on every day. Across 15 campuses, 300 outpatient sites and more than 2.5 petabytes of data and patient records, the organization needed a unified view of threats across a complex environment. Security Copilot connects Microsoft Defender, Microsoft Sentinel, Microsoft Entra, Microsoft Purview and other security tools, helping analysts correlate threats faster, eliminate silos and respond with greater precision. St. Luke’s is saving nearly 200 hours each month in phishing alert triage and creating incident reports in minutes instead of hours, helping security teams focus more time on protecting patient care.

University of Kentucky unified more than 150 AI initiatives across classrooms, research labs, healthcare settings and administrative offices through its CATS AI governance framework. Standardizing on Microsoft’s AI portfolio β€” including Microsoft 365 Copilot, Microsoft Dragon Copilot, GitHub Copilot and Microsoft Azure β€” the university achieved campus-wide deployment, providing more than 70,000 students and employees with access to AI capabilities. Clinicians are using Dragon Copilot to reduce documentation burdens and spend more time with patients, and students are using GitHub Copilot to become active builders of digital solutions, such as the Socratic Tutor: an AI-powered learning platform aimed at helping medical students master complex curriculum.

5 Reasons to Buy a MacBook Air Now Instead of Waiting

28 Juli 2026 om 16:53
Apple's next MacBook Air is several months away, but if you've been holding off on an upgrade, here's why now could actually be a good time to buy.

The Current Air is the Best Value Mid-Tier Mac

The M5 MacBook Air starts at $1,299 following Apple's recent $200 price hike, but Amazon is already knocking $100 off, bringing it down to $1,199. The base model's 16GB of RAM means it's no longer hobbled out of the box, and in terms of capability for what you pay, nothing else in the Mac lineup comes close – not even the $699 MacBook Neo, whose A18 Pro chip, capped 8GB of RAM, and lack of Thunderbolt 4 make it a different class of machine entirely. Don't forget: Apple is also offering M5 MacBook Air models in its refurbished store, with up to 15 percent off regular prices.

Prices Are More Likely to Rise Than Fall

The $200 price hike Apple applied in late June to the MacBook Air was a direct result of the ongoing global memory chip shortage, and there's no sign that the pressure is easing. If component costs stay elevated into next year's M6 refresh, there's a real chance that the next MacBook Air launches at an even higher price than today's model. Grabbing an M5 Air now could therefore be tantamount to getting ahead of the next hike.

No Air Refresh is Imminent

The next 13-inch and 15-inch MacBook Air models aren't expected until early next year at the soonest, and they're likely to be an M6 chip bump rather than a redesign – so that's at least six months of waiting for a fairly modest spec-sheet upgrade. The bigger change is an OLED display, but that's even further out: Apple is reportedly bringing the Mac lineup's long-rumored OLED transition to the MacBook Pro first (complete with a touchscreen), and the latest rumors suggest an OLED MacBook Air won't arrive until 2028 or 2029. If a touchscreen OLED panel is what you're holding out for, you're really angling for a MacBook Pro, not an Air.

The Timing Could Work in Your Favor

Apple's back-to-school discounts, now live in the U.S., mean that education discounts and gift card promotions can cut the device's retail pricing. With those discounts in hand, it could work out to be the lowest price MacBook Air you can get before the next refresh (and who knows what price hikes that could bring).

It's Already More Mac Than Most People Need

Apple Silicon long ago passed the point where the MacBook Air struggles with everyday work. The M5 chip handles photo editing, light-to-medium video work, and heavy browser sessions without breaking a sweat. The chip's architecture is designed with AI computing in mind, and it also runs silent with no fan. Not only that, it will get macOS updates for years. For most buyers, the current Air won't feel slow before they're ready to replace it anyway.

Bottom Line

Wait if you want OLED or an M6-equipped machine. But otherwise, the M5 MacBook Air you can buy today is better than waiting for a marginally faster one arriving sometime in the first half of 2027.

'Apple Upgrade' Pricing: You Can Lease an iPhone Starting at $18/Month

28 Juli 2026 om 16:41
As expected, the Apple Upgrade program launched today, allowing customers in the U.S. to lease most iPhone, Apple Watch, iPad, and Mac models. While the program is offered by Apple, the leasing is handled by financing company Klarna.

The program essentially allows you to subscribe to an Apple device with monthly payments. At the end of the lease, you can return your device and either upgrade to a new one or move on. If you prefer to own your device at the end of the lease, you can pay an amount equal to the retail price minus any lease payments made to Klarna.

No matter which option you choose at the end of your lease, you will never pay more than the retail price of the device, according to Apple.

Apple Upgrade allows you to lease an iPhone for as little as $17.99 per month, with the complete breakdown of starting prices listed below.

If a device is not listed above, it is not eligible for the Apple Upgrade program at this time. Notable exclusions include the iPhone 16, the Apple Watch SE, the entry-level iPad, the MacBook Neo, and the Mac mini.

You can learn more about the Apple Upgrade program on Apple's website and by reading our coverage of Apple's announcement earlier today.

Apple Upgrade is currently available in the U.S. only.

New Apple TV and HomePod Mini Reportedly 'Nearly Ready to Launch'

28 Juli 2026 om 16:14
New models of the Apple TV and HomePod mini are "nearly ready to launch," with Apple planning to release them "this fall," according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. In other words, the devices would likely launch around September or October.

The report said both devices will be equipped with faster processors that support Siri AI.

Earlier rumors claimed the next Apple TV would be equipped with the A17 Pro chip, which is the oldest chip that supports Apple Intelligence. The device is also expected to feature Apple's N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread.

The next HomePod mini is expected to use an Apple Watch's S9 chip or newer. Other previously-rumored features for the speaker include the N1 chip, improved sound quality, a newer Ultra Wideband chip, and a red color option.

The devices will not receive any major design changes, according to Gurman. However, he said the next Apple TV might be accompanied by an updated Siri Remote.

The current Apple TV 4K was unveiled in October 2022, while the HomePod mini was introduced in October 2020, so there has been a long wait for new models. Rumors about new Apple TV and HomePod mini models have been circulating for years and years by this point, but the devices were seemingly postponed until Siri AI launches.

Siri AI is available in the iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 betas. Those updates are expected to be released to the general public in September, at which point Siri AI will finally be available to the masses.

The current Apple TV 4K has an A15 Bionic chip from the iPhone 13 series, while the HomePod mini uses the S5 chip from the Apple Watch Series 5.

Both devices received price increases last month. In the U.S., the Apple TV now starts at $199 (up from $129), while the HomePod mini is now $129 (up from $99).

Dirk Eddelbuettel: RcppDate 0.0.7: New Upstream

28 Juli 2026 om 15:32

RcppDate ships the featureful date library written by Howard Hinnant to enable use from R packages. This header-only modern C++ library has been in pretty wide-spread use for a while now, and adds to C++11, C++14 and C++17 what is (with minor modifications) the β€˜date’ library in C++20. The RcppDate package adds no extra R or C++ code and can therefore be a zero-cost dependency for any other project; yet a number of other projects decided to re-vendor it resulting in less-efficient duplication. Oh well. C’est la vie.

This release syncs with upstream release 3.0.5 made yesterday. We also made two routine updates to the continuous integration since the last release a good year ago. The Debian and r2u packages for this new release have already been uploaded too.

Changes in version 0.0.7 (2026-07-27)

  • Updated to upstream version 3.0.5

  • Regular updates to continuous integration setup

Courtesy of my CRANberries, there is also a diffstat report for the most recent release. More information is available at the repository or the package page.
